Special Relativity | Lecture 2

(April 16, 2012) Leonard Susskind starts with a brief review of what was discussed in the first lecture -- specifically the use of vectors and spin in three dimensional space and in relation to special relativity. In 1905, while only twenty-six years old, Albert Einstein published "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies" and effectively extended classical laws of relativity to all laws of physics, even electrodynamics. In this course, Professor Susskind takes a close look at the special theory of relativity and also at classical field theory. Concepts addressed here include space-time and four-dimensional space-time, electromagnetic fields and their application to Maxwell's equations. OSU vs. Stanford 1/7/12 - Game Highlights

OSU Game Highlights of the Beavers epic quadruple-overtime loss to Stanford, 103-101 on Saturday, January 7th in Gill Coliseum. Footage courtesy of Root Sports. GAME STORY - CORVALLIS, Ore. - The numbers were mind-boggling - 171 field goal attempts, including 48 three-point tries, 14 ties, 13 lead changes, 108 rebounds and a total length of game of three hours and eight minutes - in the end Stanford outlasted Oregon State 103-101 in four overtimes in one of the most memorable games in the 63-year history of Gill Coliseum. It was the first quadruple-overtime game in Oregon State history, as two other games had gone to three extra frames, and was the Beavers' highest point total in a conference game since a 101-91 double-overtime victory over Oregon on Feb. 12, 1994. "Well, that was one to remember, even though we didn't win," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "I couldn't be happier with my team. I thought they fought hard. Tonight they realized that they can play with anybody in the country." The Beavers nearly won the game at the buzzer in the fourth extra period, but Roberto Nelson's three-point shot bounced out and Stanford (13-3, 3-1 in Pac-12) went home earning a split on its trip to the Pacific Northwest. The Beavers (11-5, 1-3) also earned a split over the weekend after defeating California last Thursday. "Well the play worked", Robinson said of his team's final 2.5 seconds of the fourth extra stanza. "It is just a lot to ask a kid to make a play like ...

Stanford: Nike Pro Combat System of Dress

www.nike.com True Warriors of Battle Like the ferocious Spartan warriors of ancient Greece, the Michigan State University football team views every game as a battle, requiring the right equipment and attitude for victory. Accordingly, the Spartans are one of nine teams chosen to wear the innovative Nike Pro Combat system of dress for the 2011 season. When the gates lift for their battle against archrival Michigan on October 15, the Spartans will sport a unique design with bronze colorways, honoring the heroic armor of their historic namesake. Bronze is visible throughout the uniform, adding an authentic strength and durability synonymous with the Spartan name. The uniform's overall innovation starts at the baselayer, as strategically placed seams, pads and cooling zones help minimize distraction and optimize protective coverage. It features customizable protection, incorporating a thin, incredibly strong carbon fiber plate. This symbolically mirrors that of the Spartan shield, which is emblazoned on the right of the baselayer. The Nike Pro Combat Deflex padding, combined with strategically placed cooling zones helps wick away sweat to keep competitors cool, while the Flywire-threaded collar allows for more breathability, enabling that extra push needed during the rigors of Saturday battle. Echoing the cry of King Leonidas, the back of the collar is inscribed with the words "Molon Labe," the Spartans' defiant challenge to the competition to "come and get them!" Gloves ...
