How to build a straw bale wall

Bales of straw may seem a bit simple, but they're very effective for building a home. They're also great insulation, offering R2 per inch thickness of the wall. Michael G. Smith shows us the straw bale wall they're building at Mendocino County's (California) Emerald Earth Sanctuary. Original content here: faircompanies.com

Straw Bale Gardening: Start to Finish

Straw bales (not hay bales) are a great place to plant vegetables. Here's my start-to-finish results! The straw is an easy, loose place for the plants to spread out their roots. Also, up on the straw bale there is essentially ZERO weeds to pick. (Note: do NOT use a "hay" bale: unlike straw, the hay has lots of seeds and you will have wheat/oats/grass/etc. growing as weeds in your garden!). Straw bales have some benefits like "raised bed" gardening.

Red Cloud Straw Bale Building_0002.wmv

Some of the construction of a straw-bale building at the home of Henry Red Cloud on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Our group of teens and adults from 1st Congregational UCC in Brainerd MN spent a week doing volunteer work, meeting people from the reservation, and learning about the culture and history of the Lakota tribe. This building will be used as a demonstration of the technique of using straw bales plastered with mud to build a very strong structure tremendously well insulated and will used as a sort of sacred space for whoever needs to have a gathering. Ceremonies by families or the community for naming, healing, birthday parties, weddings, or memorial services are just a few of the possibilities. It is hoped the straw bale techniques can be used in the future for desperately needed housing for the Lakota on the reservation. Thank you Henry for your vision, humor, and s hospitality. Thanks also to the Re-member Outreach organization for all you do to help these great people who in many ways have been all but forgotten by the nation that stole their land, violated every treaty, and killed them almost to the point of extinction. Their spirit is strong, their hope is boundless, their hospitality and generosity are both gracious and without limit.

Natural building codes: some for straw bale and adobe, little for cob

There are no building codes for most types of natural building. The one material that does have a fair amount of testing and data is straw bale, thanks to California rice growers. "So the rice growers had a very, very strong economic incentive to support the development of straw bale building so they'd have a market for their straw bales which is great," explains natural building expert Michael G. Smith, "but in the absence of that, there's nobody trying to sell dirt, there's no industry out there pushing the sale of clay soil or stones or natural sticks or wood chips. So the question becomes who's going to get behind and really fund the very expensive research that needs to happen to make these things more accessible to people wanting to build to code." strawbale venting system

Active system to use on strawbale. When using a interior vapour barrier a constant flow of air on the bales will assure low moisture content. In cold climates it's the different tempratures that meet in a thermal mass like insulation. Phase change occurs in the h2o molecules or condensation. This is why the vapour barrier is so important, because moisture from the interior should not be allowed in the thermal mass. The condensation forming from the differental temprature will be closer to the exterior. With air constantly moving over the bales moisture should not accumulate. Any imput is welcome on this subject.

Potatoes Harvested from a Straw Bale

Grown in a straw bale, these spuds (potatoes) were VERY easy to grow. I had a leftover straw bale from my neighbor's Halloween decorations. I poured some human urine into the bale over the winter and let it compost. In spring, I stuck a piece of a potato in the straw bale, occasionally watered it, and the spuds grew. Harvesting was VERY very easy, with my bare hands just plucking the spuds out of the straw bale. No need to dig. This was great for a sunny spot on concrete. If I had put the straw bale over soil it probably would have been even better since then the roots could have spread beyond the bale.
