This sonata no. 2 is such an amazing and entertaining piece to hear.. It had been on Youtube few years back but deleted. (goddamn youtube) In the video before, the uploader wrote "Marc-André Hamelin?" not sure whether this is by Hamelin or someone else.. I don't know for sure but very much, it might be.. In the documentary 'Supervirtuoso', he told the Japanese interviewer that he would find this sonata fun to the audience. A live version, not sure in Bremen, Germany (as the downloaded file says) but maybe in Japan.. Whatever, enjoy!!!! sheet music: message me WITH your E-MAIL ADDRESS

Alkan: Grande Sonate "Les quatre âges" Op. 33 - 30 Ans (video)

The second movement of Charles-Valentin Alkan's Grande Sonate "Les quatre âges" Op. 33. This movement, in d minor, is in extended sonata form, and is marked assez vite. Subtitled "Quasi-Faust", it depicts the 30-year-old man fighting and prevailing over his dark side, and has 3 themes: Faust, the Devil (an inversion of Faust's theme) and the meloncholic Marguerite's theme. It is the most substantial movement in the sonata. This movement is extremely difficult, featuring rapid chords and octaves, enormous leaps in both hands, sweeping arpeggios, as well a brief, eight-voice fugue. Played by Marc-André Hamelin, video taken from the documentary Super Virtuoso.

Kapustin, Nikolai - Prelude No. 12 (Op.53) [Audio + Score]

Music: Nikolai Kapustin Piano: Nikolai Kapustin This is Prelude No. 12 from Kapustin's set of 24 Preludes (Op.53) written for the pianoforte. Kapustin's compositional style infuses classical rigour with free-spirited jazz, producing technically demanding yet melodically-accessible pieces. As a strong advocate of Kapustin's idiomatic sophistry, supervirtuoso Marc-André Hamelin has recorded and performed some of the most brilliant works by Kapustin. Please rate and leave a comment so that I know someone out there is appreciating this. :)
Abbey Simon plays Strauss-Godowsky Die Fledermaus

Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes from J. Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus" rec. 1980 Abbey Simon (b. 8 January 1922, New York) is an American classical pianist. Simon began lessons with David Saperton at the age of five. At the age of eight, Simon was accepted by Józef Hofmann as a scholarship student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he trained with fellow classmates Jorge Bolet and Sidney Foster. Simon also took lessons from Leopold Godowsky and Harold Bauer. Shortly after graduation, he debuted at the Town Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City. He was the winner of the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1940. Simon has been hailed as a supervirtuoso and is recognized as one of the grand masters of the piano. Boston Globe critic Richard Dyer wrote, "Simon's recital offered more than a glimpse into the fabled golden age of piano playing... His virtuosity is marked not only by speed, power, lightness and accuracy but also by intricate interplay of voices and lambent colors." His recordings include the complete piano works of Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Chopin, and most of the works of Brahms and Schumann on the Vox Records label. He has toured in Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific. He has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and London Symphony Orchestra. Simon has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and the Geneva ...

Marc-Andre Hamelin at the Grammys

Marc-Andre Hamelin at the Grammys, receiving his award for the Chopin-Godowsky Studies. The announcer needs a lesson in pronunciation... Interview comments: EI: You performance of the first Godowsky/Chopin study at the Grammys a couple of years ago must have been the first time Godowsky was heard on American TV. MAH: It was also the first time that Jon Stewart announced Godowsky! That was a very difficult situation because after playing one chord you want to jump back ten feet because its amplified a thousand-fold. And your first reaction is to tone down your playing. But wait a minute, Im playing for television, I dont want to sound like milquetoast, you know? So you just have to play normally, and wish you had earplugs. Youre just unleashing this torrent of sound... The first number in the evening was Madonna's "Music," and I sure wish I had earplugs then. Im a traditionalist. Even if its like a feel-good sort of stomp or a headbanger, I want to hear the words. And theres no hope of hearing the words at that volume. The only rock concert I ever went to was Frank Zappa, You Are What You Is. That was in 81. It was at the Montreal Forum, and I didnt hear a single word. It was phenomenally earsplitting.
