Pakistan Navy test-fires several surface-to-air missiles 27/12/2010 - Ptv News
Pakistan Navy today successfully test-fired several surface-to-air missiles to assess its air defence capabilities, officials said. Three surface-to-air missile tests were carried out in Sonmiani area of Sindh province, a navy spokesman said, adding all missiles hit their targets precisely. Naval chief Admiral Noman Bashir and Air Defence Commander Vice Admiral Tayyab Ali Dogar witnessed the drill. "The successful testing will add to the defence capability of the Pakistan Navy," Mr. Bashir said. A combination of surface-to-air missiles was tested, the navy said in a statement. The "fire and forget" missiles are equipped with highly sensitive infrared homing heads that can intercept high speed aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. These weapons give the navy the flexibility to operate with various missiles and strengthen the ground-based air defence, the statement said. The area of responsibility of the navy's Air Defence Battalion stretches from Sir Creek in the east to Jiwani in the west, it added. Officials said the induction of modern weapons and equipment will augment the navy's ground-based air defence capabilities against hi-tech aircraft and missiles. Air Crash Investigation - Attack Over Baghdad (S03E02)
On 22 November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300 cargo plane owned by European Air Transport ("DHL") was struck on the left wing tip by a surface-to-air missile. Severe wing damage resulted in a fire and complete loss of hydraulic flight control systems. Because outboard left wing fuel tank 1A was full at takeoff, there was no fuel-air vapour explosion. Liquid jet fuel dropped away as 1A disintegrated. Inboard fuel tank 1 was pierced and leaking. Returning to Baghdad, the 3-man crew made an injury-free landing of the crippled aircraft, using differential engine thrust as the only pilot input. Paris Match Reporter Claudine Vernier-Palliez accompanied a Fedayeen commando unit on their strike mission against the DHL aircraft. Sara Daniel, a French weekly newsmagazine journalist claimed receipt, from an unknown source, of a video that showed insurgents, faces concealed, firing a missile at the A300. Daniel was researching a feature about Iraqi resistance groups but she disclaimed any specific knowledge of the people who carried out the attack, despite being present at the moment of attack.

PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com Pakistan today successfully conducted the test fire of indigenously developed Short Range Surface to Surface Multi Tube Missile Hatf IX (NASR). NASR, with a range of 60 km, can carry nuclear warheads of appropriate yield, with high accuracy, and possesses shoot & scoot attributes. This quick response system addresses the need to deter evolving threats, specially at shorter ranges. The test was witnessed by Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General Khalid Ahmed Kidwai (R), Chairman NESCOM Mr Irfan Burney, Commander Army Strategic Forces Command, Lieutenant General Tariq Nadeem Gilani, Senior Officers from the Strategic forces and scientists and engineers of strategic organizations. The Director General Strategic Plans Division, Lieutenant General Khalid Ahmed Kidwai (R), terming the NASR Missile as a weapon of peace, said that the test was a major development which will consolidate Pakistan's deterrence capability at all levels of the threat spectrum, thereby ensuring peace in the region. Unlike a tornado, a dust devil typically forms on a clear day when the ground is heated by the sun, warming the air just above the ground. As heated air near the surface rises quickly through a small pocket of cooler air above it, the air may begin to rotate, if conditions are just right. The Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured an image of one of these Martian Twisters. Using this image, scientists have recreated this dust devil in digital space.

Jan. 5th 2012 10pm Nomac Rig #17 drilled into a shallow gas pocket soon after spudding in at a drilling depth of 900' northwest of Sweetwater, Oklahoma this evening around 6pm and burned to the ground. No injuries were reported. Workers stated that they encountered the abnormally pressurized zone at relief time around 6pm when the relief crew was in the change house. It was first thought that they had encountered a shallow air pocket but after testing with a "sniffer" (a device to determine the presence of hydrocarbons) the well soon caught fire. Witnesses 3/4 of a mile to the north reported hearing a loud "boom" from their residence "and then it sounded like a jet engine was right outside our home". When they drove down to the drill site to investigate the well was discharging fluid, soon after that something ignited the gas and the rig caught fire. Bar Hoppers (used to increase the mud weight and counter downhole pressures) were not yet rigged up. A gas separator, chokes and a BOP stack were also on location and waiting to be rigged up and tested as soon as the surface portion of the hole was completed. Without these blowout prevention devices in place there is little to nothing that can be done to control the well. It's very unusual to hit a shallow air pocket in the area and even rarer to encounter any hydrocarbons at this shallow depth above the planned surface casing. The aurora borealis or northern lights is one of the most spectacular natural displays on the planet. Theories about its origins have been debated for centuries and common misconceptions persist that the aurora is the sun's rays scattered off ice crystals in the high atmosphere. In truth, the light is created more than 100km above Earth's surface as high speed electrons and protons ejected from the sun in a solar flare or coronal mass ejection collide with air molecules in the upper atmosphere. The charged particles from the sun excite air molecules which then de-excite by emitting light. The display is most common around the north and south poles because the Earth's magnetic field deflects the solar wind from the equator to the poles. Prithvi I class was a surface-to-surface missile having a maximum warhead mounting capability of 1000 kg, with a range of 150 km. It has an accuracy of 10 -- 50 metres and can be launched from Transporter erector launchers. This class of Prithvi missile was inducted into the Indian Army in 1994. Prithvi II class is also a single stage liquid-fuelled missile having a maximum warhead mounting capability of 500 kg, but with an extended range of 250 kilometres. It was developed with the Indian Air Force being the primary user. It was first test-fired on January 27, 1996 and the development stages were completed in 2004. This variant has been inducted in to the Army as well.In a recent test, the Missile was launched with an extended range of 350 kilometres and improved Aided Inertial Navigation. The missile has the features to deceive Anti Ballistic Missiles. After a failed test on 24 September 2010 two more missiles were launched on December 22, 2010 which proved to be complete success. According to ITR director SP Dash: "It was a fantastic launch. Two missiles aimed at two different targets, met all the mission objectives. It was a copy book success." Optically Controlled Bubble Microrobot
Our lab at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa has developed an optically controlled microrobot system. The microrobots consist of very tiny (0.1 to 0.5 mm in diameter) air bubbles inside of a fluid-filled chamber. Light is used to heat the surface of the chamber, which generates a force that moves around the microrobots. The microrobots can be used move around objects that are less than a millimeter in size. Great design of moving bed filter using a new ceramic media. I AM NOW SELLING THE FINISHED TYPE OF MEDIA - HARDENED AND BEST MEDIA I HAVE EVER SEEN: www.ebay.co.uk SPREAD THE WORD. After testing the media in one of my old designs of moving bed filter, I noticed that the media had started to wear away so I decided to fill the new one to full capacity and made a great discovery - The media actually seems to perform better when 'vibrating' and the increase in media volume means more surface area for bacteria, which in turn means better filtration. Groovy.... The company who sent me the media now have an improved media which is much more robust but for the present time, I'm glad that I had the chance to test the softer media or I wouldn't have decided to fill the media section of the new filter as full as I did. That's the benefit from proper testing, I guess..... This design of filter has the following awesome benefits: Huge surface area for bacteria colonisation compared to traditional internal filters (pump driven) and K1 moving bed filters. Clear design for observing media action and bonus of seeing when foam needs cleaning. Slim filter profile to minimise space taken up in tank. Curved top of filter to prevent air getting trapped (as it sometimes did in previous designs). Filter can be operated by a small external air pump for super low running costs and in event of a power cut can be driven by battery operated air pump. Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 Tops 200 MPH! - Hot Rod Unlimited Episode 7
On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, HOT ROD Editor In Chief David Freiburger drives the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Camaro ZL1 to 202 mph, making it the first 2012 ZL1 to exceed 200 mph. This very same ZL1 in the exact same configuration (save for wheels and tires and the rollcage) was also the first to run 10s in the quarter mile. The ZL1 Camaros were first delivered to the public in early April, making 580 hp from their supercharged, 6.2L, LSA engines. Within days of delivery, Lingenfelter had its ZL1 making 720 hp at 6500 rpm and 650 lb-ft at 4650 rpm, both measured at the rear tires. The performance parts are all from Lingenfelter: CNC-ported cylinder heads, a GT9 camshaft, a ported supercharger cover, overdrive blower pulleys, a cold-air kit, 63-lb/hr fuel injectors, a voltage booster for the fuel pump, a 160-degree thermostat, and tuning. The entire package, installed, is $11495. Everything else on this manual-trans car is stock. The performance testing was done with 109-octane VP fuel and 15 psi boost. On April 18, 2012, the Lingenfelter ZL1 ran 10.79 at 134.36 mph at Muncie Dragway in Indiana. That was on drag wheels and tires. On April 30, 2012, the car was delivered to the Continental Tire Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas. Shod with Continental Extreme Contact tires on the original ZL1 wheels, the Camaro was tested on the 8-1/2-mile oval. I've only scratched the surface of this mod, as I went straight for the new bosses. Will spend the coming days to see what's out there. It's a breath of fresh air to say the least =) On the subject of the bosses I would have liked if they did more dmg, but less speed - so you could dodge their swoops. But it's good fun as it is =) There also seems to be a bug that if you die they will still remain.
