Giacomo Meyerbeer - Robert le Diable - "Idole de ma vie" (Joan Sutherland)

No star-soprano can do without a big opening aria replete with a cabaletta (sometimes with chorus). Isabelle from "Robert le Diable" is proof of this rule. Presented here is the interpretation of Joan Sutherland which seems to me the best rendition of the three that I've heard (Renata Scotto (an excellent, dramatic account) and June Anderson (seriously underpowered)). I'm thinking of posting the other two in a little bit. Hope you enjoy :)!

Joan Sutherland sings Euryanthe's aria "Glöcklein im Tale" in 1955. The conductor is Fritz Stiedry. She later stated she loved singing the role of Euryanthe. This is one of the best examples of her early career, when the voice was still developing toward the dramatic repertoire.

Joan Sutherland - Lucia Mad Scene (1962)

In the early 1960s, the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland emerged as an opera star of the first magnitude, setting new standards of vocal excellence in the bel canto repertoire that have yet to be matched. Fortunately, Miss Sutherland's American career included numerous television appearances. The earliest of these telecasts marked Miss Sutherland's American television debut, less than a month after her New York debut (in a concertperformance of Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda) and well before her Metropolitan Opera debut (as Lucia, on November 26, 1961). Here Dame Joan sings the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.

LYRICS: The lights shine down the valley The wind blows up the alley, Oh -- well I wish I was lying in the arms of Mary. She took the pains of boyhood, and turned them in to feel good, Oh -- how I wish I was lying in the arms of Mary Mary was the girl who taught me all I had to know -- she put me right on my first mistake -- Summer wasn't good when I learned all she had to show -- she really gave all a boy could take --- Oh -- So now when I get lonely, still looking for the one and only, That's when I wish was lying in the arms of Mary. INSTRUMENTAL (same as part asterisked above) Mary was the girl who taught me all I had to know -- she put me right on my first mistake -- Summer wasn't good when I learned all she had to show -- she really gave all a boy could take ---- ---- The lights shine down the valley, The wind blows up the alley Oh -- well I wish I was lying in the arms of Mary.
