Chinese-run sweatshops anger Italy's workers

Chinese factories in Italy are not only driving the "fast fashion" industry of cheap goods, but pushing Italians out of an industry that has historically been identified with them. Now, locals in the textile industry are upset about the fast fashion, or "pronto moda", coming from Chinese workers - with Made in Italy labels. Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com People admired the two one-eyed mascots of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but British media revealed that the Chinese toy factory which produces the mascots is a sweatshop with poor working conditions that are draining workers. The London Organising Committee has announced its full investigation. Many Chinese said that sweatshops exist all over China, with longstanding poor treatment of workers. British "Sun" published an exclusive report on January 19th. It stated that the mascots for the London Olympic Games are produced by a Chinese sweatshop. The report said that the factory named Rainbow, located in Yancheng city Jiangsu province, exploits workers. The workers have a very low monthly salary, only a little bit more than 900 yuan RMB ($142 USD). The report noted that no holiday time off is given to workers. They work for 385 hours per month, which equal nearly 12 hours per day. The report also quoted Zhang Qing, a 40-year-old female worker, who says she is exhausted but has no other choice. The "Sun" report attracted the concern of the London Organising Committee. They say they have ordered an investigation and will publish the result upon completion. Li Xiangyang, a Chinese lawyer and activist, said that China Exports 30% of light industrial products to other countries, which is one of the pillars supporting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s economic system. ARE THE KARDASHIANS MORE INTERESTED TO STOP SLAVE LABOR, OR ONLY IN STOPPING THE MEDIA PERCEPTION THEY USE SLAVE LABOR? FLY ME TO CHINA TONIGHT. I WILL FIND OUT!!! Was a Kardashian clothing line manufactured using slave labor? Kardash Keeping-UP-with-the-Kardashians Workers' rights organization China Labor Watch has just published a damning investigative report into a pair of factories in China, where working conditions apparently resembled an Upton Sinclair/Triangle Shirtwaist nightmare vision of proletariat misery. The report alleges that clothing designer Bebe had products manufactured in the sweatshops... including a line of clothing, handbags, and jewelry that were part of the "K-Dash by Kardashian" brand. If these allegations are true, then the Kardashians would enter the rarified class of businesspeople who have happily availed themselves of the curiously unsympathetic labor ethics endemic to our beloved People's Republic. (I just described Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, and every single major entrepreneur of the modern age, besides maybe the toolbox who runs American Apparel.) Now, before you hop on the anti-Kardashian train (toot-toooooot!) it's worth pointing out that even if the report is accurate, Kris Jenner was walking through the factory with a bullwhip screaming Mandarin obscenities at pregnant laborers, while Kourtney and Khloé Taiko drums to maintain the rhythm of the assembly line and Kim stared blankly into space babbling something about her career ...

Sweatshop Wages and Third-World Workers: Are the Wages Worth the Sweat?

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Prof. Ben Powell discusses the economics of sweatshops. He begins with a few photos and personal travel stories to demonstrate typical working conditions in third world countries. He then discusses the economic forces that determine working conditions and wages. Looking at empirical data, he finds that sweatshop workers earn higher wages than non-sweatshop workers in their respective third world country. He concludes with recommendations to activists who want to actually help sweatshop workers. Kardashian Family Accused of Using Sweatshops for Brand

The Kardashian family empire is crumbling. First the sham wedding and now accusations of child labor abuse. Hey everyone this is Ani Esmailian for Hollyscoop. The Kardashian's brand is under fire with accusations that products were created in foreign sweatshops using child labor. Star magazine repots that some of the workers are as young as sixteen years old and are being abused and imprisoned against their will. Geez, that doesn't sound good. The Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights tells Star: "The Kardashians are in bed with some pretty bad people. Not only are celebrities like the Kardashians taking advantage of these workers, they are holding hands with a government that spits on democracy and women's rights." Most of the workers spend seven days a week working in the factory to produce the products filled with a "stench of sewage." Now we know how the family made their reported $65 million dollars last year.

Top 10 Worst Sweatshop Made Shoe Brands

No Copyright Infringement Intended Top 10 Worst Sweatshop Made Shoe Brands Many types of shoes are made in sweatshops. However, the biggest problem is found with sneakers and athletic shoes. Most athletic shoes are made in sweatshops in Asian countries. Child labor is also very common in the shoe industry. In general, a sweatshop can be described as a workplace where workers are subject to extreme exploitation, including the absence of a living wage or benefits, poor working conditions, and arbitrary discipline, such as verbal and physical abuse. Since sweatshop workers are paid less than their daily expenses, they are never able to save any money to improve their lives. They are trapped in an awful cycle of exploitation. Defenders of sweatshops often bring up the fact that even though sweatshops are bad, they at least give people jobs they wouldn't have had otherwise. However, the type of jobs sweatshop workers receive are so bad that they rarely improve their economic situation. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has estimated that 250 million children between the ages of five and fourteen work in developing countries. 61% in Asia, 32% in Africa and 7% in Latin America. Many of these children are forced to work. They are denied an education and a normal childhood. Some are confined and beaten. Some are denied the right to leave the workplace and go home to their families. Some are even abducted and forced to work.

Federal agents arrest and threaten innocent workers while sweatshop boss Tony Luo goes free

MORE INFO: equalrights4workers.wordpress.com In the past few years, the Justice Will Be Served! Campaign has been organizing thousands of workers throughout New York State to stand up against sweatshop conditions in the service industry. In spite of firing, blacklisting and even physical assault from employers, many workers have still come forward to fight for their rights. This has not only improved working conditions, but also has helped many other workers gain confidence to enforce the law through litigation or filing complaints with government agencies. In 2009, due to the complaints of 20 drivers of the Flushing New York enterprise, Yes! Car Service, the NY State Department of Labor began investigating rampant misclassification practices in the car service industry. For over ten years, drivers worked up to 16 hours per day without any wages and were forced to pay the company weekly fees to work. Owner Tony Luo collected all cash from the drivers and did not report to the government. When drivers protested the fees, Luo retaliated against them with threats, harassment, firing, and even gang violence. On August 2, 2010, based on the drivers' evidence, the NYS Department of Labor determined that drivers of the Yes Car Service Enterprise are employees and not independent contractors, awarding unemployment insurance (UI) to one of the drivers and requiring that Luo hand in payroll records of all employees, which he had never submitted to the federal or state government ...

Occupy Princeton and Princeton for Worker Rights Speak Out Against HEI Sweatshop Hotels

As the Princeton Trustees gathered for a meeting on Friday, Dec. 16th, Occupy Princeton (www.occupyprinceton.net) and Princeton for Worker Rights spoke out against HEI Hospitality's unethical business practices and urged Princeton University to follow Yale and Brown's lead in terminating investments in the corporation. In an industry that delivers high luxury to its guests, HEI workers struggle to make ends meet. They work long hours performing jobs that tax their health, even while many are unable to afford health plans offered to them. And when they organize collectively, workers are often confronted with sophisticated campaigns of coercion and litigation, designed to deter them from having a say in the decisions that affect them. Full script: Parents and prospective students, Princeton may use your tuition dollars to fund sweatshop hotels that abuse their workers. Princeton's investment in HEI Hospitality allows it to profit off of the exploitation of workers. Yale and Brown have decided not to reinvest in HEI Hospitality. Princeton should do the same. Princeton's motto is, "In the nation's service." Princeton's trustees are not in the nation's service. They are in the service of sweatshops. In whose service will you be?
