A miniature "kamikaze" drone designed to quietly hover in the sky before dive-bombing and slamming into a human target will soon be part of the US Army's arsenal, officials say. Dubbed the "Switchblade," the robotic aircraft represents the latest attempt by the United States to refine how it takes out suspected militants. Weighing less than two kilos, the drone is small enough to fit into a soldier's backpack and is launched from a tube, with wings quickly folding out as it soars into the air, according to manufacturer AeroVironment. Powered by a small electric motor, the Switchblade transmits video in real time from overhead, allowing a soldier to identify an enemy, the company said in a press release last month. "Upon confirming the target using the live video feed, the operator then sends a command to the air vehicle to arm it and lock its trajectory onto the target," it said. The project evolves episode by episode and the Weird Girls mix between those involved from the beginning and the new members increasing with every event. Each episode is planned for up to three months in advance with the girls themselves knowing as little as is possible. They know there will be a photo shoot, they are aware they will be filmed and they are aware of the day and night in question. As much of the rest of the event is kept as quiet as possible except for a theme song which is given to them a week or two in advance and a request for measurements for the custom costumes. Each episode produces media but the project focus is the event itself and how the girls themselves react and morph within costume. None of the girls are professional actresses or models and part of the inspiration was to get girls to step outside of themselves and shed some inhibitions. This is a most unusual Morphing aircraft. It fits into the "Will it fly or Won't it fly?" category, proving the unlikely. Air hogs seems to be on the cutting edge of making unusual flying machines. The Switchblade is certainly another. The motor configuration on the wing is adjustable from hover to forward flight. Controls must be dealt with a gentle touch and trimming before flying, helps a lot. Once you get the hang of it, it really is a lot of fun. We have bashed them into houses, trees, fences and the Earth and still have not even broken a prop! It is lots of fun just to hover and land too. Note: It is imperative to fly in a big space and then go high before morphing into forward flight. After morphing, keep motors running and wait till it levels out before trying to turn. Switchblade Symphony was a San Francisco, United Statesbased band which was formed in 1989 by composer Susan Wallace and vocalist Tina Root. They released their first album in 1995 on the Cleopatra Records label. They also had two live guitarists, first Robin Jacobs and then George Earth, and two live drummers, first Eric Gebow (now with Blue Man Group) and then Scott van Shoick. Switchblade Symphony's music combined orchestral sounds with heavy synth sequences and ethereal vocals to create a highly original sound resembling The Flower Duet sung over a twisted union of classical music and gothic rock. The band's name refers to this union, the result of cutting up elements of classical music to mix them with harder sounds.[1] Though this sound is uncommon, it might be compared with Rhea's Obsession, Siouxsie,[2] Cindergarden, The Machine in the Garden and Dead Can Dance.
