Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam), who are all of Indian descent. The band's name is derived from John Mclaughlin's acoustic Indian fusion band Shakti which was active in the 1970s. This band consisted of John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, L. Shankar, TH "Vikku" Vinayakram, and R. Raghavan. The word Shakti translates in Sanskrit to "female creative power" or "goddess." This piece features Ustad Zakir Hussain's tabla solo during their concert in Pune on 5th February 2012. 2:37 onwards is a slight jugalbandi between Ustad Zakir Hussain and V. Selvaganesh. This track features Dr. Aneesh Pradhan performing repertoire in Teentaal, a rhythm cycle of sixteen beats. This excerpt is from a live concert in New Delhi on August 31, 2011. Dr. Aneesh Pradhan is one of India's leading tabla players. A disciple of Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, he has inherited from his guru a considerable repertoire of traditional tabla solo compositions from the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad and Punjab gharanas. A popular performer at most prestigious concerts and festivals in the country, Dr. Pradhan has also traveled widely and performed overseas at major events. He has also recorded prolifically for national and international record labels accompanying a host of vocalists and instrumentalists. Apart from his work with art music, Dr. Pradhan is also a frequent participant in cross-cultural musical collaborations both in the capacity of performer and composer. Drawn equally towards melody and rhythm, his compositions range from pieces composed for tabla solo repertoire, to melodic and text-based compositions that are based on traditional vocal and instrumental forms of North Indian art music. Dr. Pradhan has also been a member of the Japan-based Asian Fantasy Orchestra since 1998, and has also participated as composer and performer in an ongoing collaboration with the Ensemble Modern, Frankfurt. Sajid Ali is widely regarded amongst the finest tabla soloists to have emerged from Pakistan in recent years. Having been trained by Khalifa Ashiq Hussain, his grandfather Ustad Talib Hussain Jaffery and father Umeed Ali, Sajid's tabla playing bears the hallmark of the Punjab Baj by combining tradition with modernity.
