Alternative etymology is from another Italian word for „slag" („getto" or „ghetto"). Many European and Middle Eastern cities once had a historical Jewish quarter and some still have it. In Venice the island where the slag was stored, was also the area of the Jewish cofinement. This first, as it seems, „Jewish ghetto" in Europe existed because Jews were viewed not only as that they were foreigners due to their non-Christian beliefs in a Renaissance Christian environment, but also their involvement in commercial enterprises might be a threat to a local business. In the 19th century, Jewish ghettos in Europe were progressively abolished, and their walls demolished. The Germans reinstituted Jewish ghettos during World War II in Eastern Europe, turning them into de-facto concentration camps and death camps in the Holocaust. These Nazi ghettos used to concentrate Jews before extermination sometimes coincided with traditional Jewish ghettos and Jewish quarters. Expediency was the key factor for the Nazis in the Final Solution. This very typical, impressive Polish tango tells a story about a provincial little town of Kałuszyn, where poor tailor Abram lives.
