Alex Rudinger - Animals As Leaders - "Tempting Time"
A couple of years ago I recorded a cover of Tempting Time. I had it on YouTube for awhile but inevitably took it down - I just wasn't very happy with my performance and felt that I could have done it better. Since then I've gotten a lot of requests to put it back up so I finally decided to redo it. It felt good recording this song again. I relearned a lot of it left lead and I tried not to leave out any details. For the most part, I'm happy with how it turned out. In addition to this I also covered a newer AAL song off of "Weightless" called 'Do Not Go Gently' ( to view please click here - www.youtube.com ). This is also the first video (along with 'Do Not Go Gently') I've uploaded with a completely natural kick drum. I'll continue to trigger my bass drum in the future for songs with intricate foot parts and fast double bass, but for songs like this I much prefer the natural sound. I used an AKG D112. You may also notice that my setup is a bit different. I decided to rock my 'gooood buddaaaay' Travis Orbin's setup for these covers. After transcribing these songs I realized that I hadn't used my high toms for any fills so there was no need for them to be in the setup. Additionally, both songs call for a stack, and at no point is there a splash or more than one china being used. I also wanted to perform with the stack on my non-dominant side, so Trav's setup seemed rather appropriate. I believe the only difference is that there is no ride cymbal - again, neither tune called <b>...</b>

I'm in love with Animals As Leaders! Tempting Time is one of my favourite progressive metal instrumentals. It took me around 2 weeks to practice this song, but I can't do the augmented C major 7th arpeggio descending in a triplet 16th note sequence in the beginning yet. But I'm almost there :) I was able to simulate stereo guitar doubling by double-tracking and panning left right while changing one channel's pitch and timing a slight bit. Animals as Leaders - Weightless Drum Cover by Troy Wright 2012
Although playing the drum part of this song as closely as I could, I wanted to play it with a bit more freedom (incorporating my own fills, feels etc in certain parts) as apposed to my other Drum Covers and especially the last Animals as Leaders cover i did (Tempting Time) trying to play the piece exactly note for note. I ended up cutting and looping one of these bars which turned into a drum solo section at 3:15 in this video. There are fun 5/8 parts to Weightless that give this song a broad range of dynamics and feel. During this new section I also introduce the last part of the song which is a 5 against 4 polyrhythm played on the guitar to make the transition smoother. I think with this addition of the new solo section it joins these last 2 sections of the song together nicely. This has easily been one of the most enjoyable Animals as Leaders songs to play. It's probably one of their heaviest songs as far as big riff's, huge thumping drums and again amazing song writing goes. The majority of this song is really groove orientated with AAL's quickly introducing big back beats and open feels at the start of the song but also features quick odd metered sections which string this song together into one amazing master piece. I had actually learnt this song last year but never completely finished it, so until now had only sort of played it here and there. What this did was give me more time to work on other grooves and experiment with different things over the 9 phrase as well as work on a drum solo (6:10) over the last riff at the end.
