PreOp® Patient Education: Achilles Tendon Repair Surgery

www.PreOp.com Patient ED @ 617-379-1582INFO Your doctor has recommended that you undergo surgery to repair your ruptured Achilles tendon. But what does that actually mean? On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown. You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in. You will then be transferred to the operating table, where you'll be placed in a prone position, with your leg supported. In the operating room, the anesthesiologist will begin to administer anesthesia - either general... ... or regional. The surgeon will then apply antiseptic solution to the skin around the area where the incisions will be made... place a sterile drape around the operative site. After allowing a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect ... an incision will be made in the long axis of the ankle over the injured tendon. The incision is carried down through the skin, exposing the underlying tendon sheath. Patient Education The sheath is then opened to reveal the tendon itself and the contained, damaged Achilles tendon. The damaged portion of the tendon is then cut away, taking as little tissue as possible, but cutting back to strong, viable tendon fibers. The surgeon weaves sutures through the tendon fibers in a pattern designed to hold with good strength. Then the two tendon ends are pulled into contact and tied securely. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures. After sterile dressings are applied, a well-padded splint will be ...

Shaolin Yi Jin Jing Muscle & Tendon Changing Classic

"The basic purpose of Yijinjing is to turn flaccid and frail sinews and tendons into strong and sturdy ones. The movements of Yijinjing are at once vigorous and gentle. Their performance calls for a unity of will and strength, ie using ones will to direct the exertion of muscular strength. It is coordinated with breathing. Better muscles and tendons means better health and shape, more resistance, flexibility, endurance, and is obtained as follows: - postures influences the static and nervous structure of the body - stretching muscles and sinews affects organs, joints, meridians and Qi - torsion affects metabolism and Jing production - breathing produce more and better refined Qi - active working gives back balance and strength to body and mind (brain, nervous system and spirit). The Yì Jin Jing (Chinese: ???; Wade-Giles: I Chin Ching; literally "Muscle/Tendon Change Classic") is a qìgong manual most notable as the source of the attribution of Shaolin Kung Fu to Bodhidharma, though this has been doubted by several martial arts historians. Pan Wei was a devoted student and practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, and his treatise in the form of- a preface reflects his vast knowledge of this subject. It is common knowledge that within the works of Lao-Zu, Chuang Zu, and even Mencius, many references are made to the ancients practicing various forms of breathing exercises. Pan Wei says that he had consulted various medical treatises; however, he did not mention that any ...

But what does that actually mean? Your Achilles tendon is the connection between the heel and the most powerful muscle group in the body. It is the strongest, largest and thickest tendon in the body. It begins in the mid-leg and descends to the heel. Unfortunately, the Achilles tendon is extremely susceptible to acute and chronic injury because of the demands it withstands. When it ruptures, patients feel a "pop" and may feel that they've been struck from behind. This is often followed by weakness and pain. Patient Education Now let's talk in detail about the procedure your doctor has recommended. That particular recommendation was based on a number of factors: * the state of your health, * the severity of your condition, * an assessment of alternative treatments or procedures and finally, * the risks associated with doing nothing at all. And remember, the final decision is up to you. No one can force you to undergo a surgical procedure against your will. Patient Education ...

www.footanklealliance.com. In this Video Dr. Khosroabady discusses the achilles tendon rupture and how it is repaired. This video has some graphic picture of the tendon If you're an athlete of just about any kind and have been one for any length of time -- and you're a man -- chances are you or another athlete pal of yours has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is that ropey fibrous tissue that connects your heel to the muscles of your lower leg. It's named for the Greek god Achilles whose mother, the goddess Thetis, heard a prophecy that her son would die young. So she dipped him into the River Styx to protect him, yet she held him by his heels and his feet/ankles never touched the water, making that part of his body vulnerable. Achilles' was struck on his "unprotected" heel by an arrow during the Trojan War, killing him. (According to Wikipedia.org, the first use of Achilles tendon to describe this part of the human anatomy took place in 1693 by Flemish/Dutch anatomist Philip Verheyen.) If you've ever experienced an Achilles tendon rupture, you know how excruciatingly painful it can be. Some victims have described the pain as feeling as if they've been shot in that area. A rupture of the Achilles tendon is not uncommon, although most people who experience the rupture are men (the ratio of Achilles tendon rupture sufferers is 20:1, men to women). Most rupture the tendon while playing sports, often when they jump up and land awkwardly. Yet ruptures ...

Biceps Tendon Tear -- Deadlift

I needed a token deadlift to win the Oxford-Cambridge powerlifting varsity. Instead I ruptured my distal biceps tendon on the opener. (Then I took a second attempt and locked it out for the win, torn biceps and all.) UPDATE (10/25/2011): Since people are still watching this thing, I wanted to say that it took about 9 months to get back to 100% on my deadlift and now, 17 months later, I'm considerably stronger than I was on the day of the injury, though I now strictly use a double overhand hook grip to compete and often wear straps. You can see a 642# deadlift from last Saturday at www.youtube.com

Equine Distal Forelimb; Tendons and Ligaments

A computer-generated movie that accompanied my PhD thesis. The movie shows many of the major tendons and ligaments in the equine distal forelimb. The models of the bones were created from real equine limb bones using in-house photogrammetric software that I wrote. The bones were imported into Blender, and the ligaments and tendons were modeled by hand. Finally, a custom RenderMan exporter script was used to export the models and camera animations to the Aqsis renderer.

Distal Biceps Rupture | Biceps Tendon Surgery | Vail, Colorado

drmillett.com Orthopedic Shoulder Surgeon, Dr. Peter Millett is an expert in treating ruptures of the distal tendon of the biceps muscle (tendon attaching to the forearm). This injury accounts for approximately 1.2 cases per 100000 patients per year. The dominant extremity is involved 86% of the time and smokers seem to have 7.5 time higher risk of a tendon rupture. The biceps muscle plays an important role in flexing the elbow. The mechanism of injury of this type of tendon rupture is not well understood. Both mechanical mechanisms as well as limited vascularization (blood supply) of the tendon are likely to play a role. Distal biceps tendon ruptures present with an initial tearing sensation accompanied by acute pain; weakness may follow. The hook test is very reliable for diagnosing ruptures (the examiner 'hooks' his index finger around the torn tendon', and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide information about the integrity and possible degeneration of the tendon. In recent years, the surgical fixation methods available for re-fixation of the torn tendon have improved. Surgical techniques which have been used for various reasons are called 'one-incision' and 'two-incision' techniques; The surgical technique of the 'one' or 'single-incision' procedure is further explained in this video. Tendon Gliding

A tendon (or sinew) is a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that usually connects muscle to bone and is capable of withstanding tension. Tendons are similar to ligaments and fascia as they are all made of collagen except that ligaments join one bone to another bone, and fascia connect muscles to other muscles. Tendons and muscles work together and can only exert a pulling force. - Exploring Hand Therapy - Treatment2Go bring you the best clinical tips and video courses available. Biceps tendon strength and rehab/prehab

This video is a simple series that specifically covers training principles and exercises that help beginners and injured athletes build their biceps tendons up so that they do not get injured again, and the training principles will help minimize the risk of injury for athletes who have yet to develop symptoms. This video is for, well, pretty much everyone. Most people are pretty early in their planche and/or back lever training and this video is to get all of you in that category off to a safe and well-planned start to your training. To those who try to rush their training or perhaps just have unbalanced training that leads to elbow pain: this video will help you get back into the game! Important basics: Straight arm static holds (primarily the planche and back lever positions and any variations you care to think of) require very well-conditioned biceps tendons to perform correctly, meaning with truly straight arms. There's a problem: tendons take around 10x longer to heal than muscle tissue. That means you have to train with this limitation in mind. We all know that the full lay positions require a large amount of muscular strength to perform, so it would seem that you just need to get strong muscles to do these things. Well, I've done that and found out the hard way that if you do this before you've put in the time to condition the biceps tendons to handle the strain you will end up with horrible tendonitis... EVEN IF YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD THE POSITION! You don ...
