"Backpacking Tents" by Nutnfancy, Part 1

PART 1 of 3 ////////////// Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy. A minimalist tent tarp, bivy, or floor-less tent are some ways to avoid to some of those hassles. But my favorite option is a quality designed and constructed lightweight backpacking tent like the ones profiled in this Nutnfancy series of videos. Here I cover most of the design aspects and experience-based opinions on just such a tent. POUs, Firepower vs Mobility, Impact, Livability concerns, Longevity, Ventialtion, Maintenance, Sleeve and Pole Construction, Fabric Choices, Convenience Features, and buying sources are all covered in the series. It would be unrealistic and probably of limited use for me to review certain models since most are so shortlived in the marketplace. Instead I use category representatives and teach the features, construction, sizing, and the many considerations to arm the buyer with the knowledge to make the best purchase choice. Always buy out-of-season whenever possible to save big money; it's very possible to get a ultra-quality BP tent this way for well under $200. Take care of it and it will serve you and your family forever too. Location was the scenic and beautiful Rocky Mountains with Allie the Mountain Dog in tow. This series was lots of work to put together, make happen, and ...

And setting one up is a breeze. To complete this How-To you will need: A dome tent A ground tarp Step 1: Lay down the ground tarp Find a clear, flat area to pitch your tent. Remove any rocks and debris, and then lay down the ground tarp. Step 2: Unfold the tent Unfold the tent on top of the ground tarp, with the door facing in the desired direction. Make sure all zippers are closed, except the door zipper. Set aside the rain fly. Step 3: Assemble the poles Assemble the poles according to instructions. In many cases, you can just shake the pole sections into place. Step 4: Insert the poles into the appropriate sleeves Push the poles through the fabric sleeves, taking care not to have the poles separate. Step 5: Insert one pole into its pockets Take one of the poles and place it into a corner pocket. Insert the other end of the pole into the pocket on the opposite corner of the tent. Repeat with the second pole. You may need another person to help with this. Tip: The two poles should cross, forming an "X ...

Southern California Shanty Town / Tent City

Here are some videos of a tent city / shanty town that has popped up in the suburbs of Southern California. I've never seen anything like this in America since the great depression. At first it seems as though many of the residents had lost their houses due to the mortgage crisis, and I am sure some had, but it seems rather that most here have just fell on hard times due to the economy in Souther California in general. The tent city has been removed by the city and no longer exists to my knowledge. We only went there a few times, as our major work is in Los Angeles with the homeless on Skid Row.

Kelty Gunnison 2 Tent: "Alpine Press" by Nutnfancy

The Kelty Gunnison 2 series out-performs its price level and as proven in this actual high altitude test, it can be pressed into mountaineering service when needed. Its 92"x58" floor area and 40" height provides its users with 37 sq ft (+10 sq ft vestibule) of living area (specs subject to change of course). I prefer rectangular floor plans for their roominess and simplicity and Gunnisons have it. This gives excellent livability for one dude or dudette plus dog; two adults will find it a tight fit. Factory weight is listed around 5 lbs 9 oz but my upgraded Kely Gunnison 2 weighs in at actual pack weight of 6 lbs 11 oz. These upgrades include a cut and fitted footprint (from plastic blue tarp) and 8 MSR GroundHog tent stakes (superior to the stock aluminum ones). Expect fast pitching due to color-coded tent fly and clip pole attachments. Some sagginess in the sidewalls may be noted in the design, a characteristic of two-pole designs. The polyester rain fly is excellent, providing double vestibules on each of the zippered, mesh entry doors. The crisscrossing DAC aluminum two pole design is common and some noodly-ness should be expected but most will find it adequately strong. But when properly guyed out, extra rigidity is achieved and the tent Gunnison will ride out moderate winds well (angled rain fly sheds wind well too). Velcro pole attachments for fly-to-poles are provided. Poles are DAC 7000 series aluminum. Mesh integration is excellent (as shown) and achieves good ...

REI Quarter Dome T2+ tent: "Alpine Superstar" by Nutnfancy

When the hike is steep and long, experienced hikers will look to shave weight. A key target: your choice of shelter. Some will go minimalist with just a tarp or rain fly but I always prefer the tent for its comfort, bug, snake resistence, and total wind and weather proofness. So for these hikes a very light tent is in order. All manufacturers lowball their tent weights; I find them to be about 1 lb underrated. Therefore a quality 2-person tent often weighs about 6.5 lbs. The REI Quarterdome T2 Plus (extended version of the regular Quarterdome) breaks those ranks with a 5 lb tent (about 5 lbs 5 oz after stake, footprint, guyline upgrades that I do). For a tent providing 35 square feet of livability and 15 square feet of vesitbule storage area, that is an achievement (the T3 Plus will have 47+15 sq ft but is heavier). The Quarterdome T2 Plus packs small and carries easily in its compression strap equipped olive drab stuff sack. The 94"x54" living area is size efficient (rectangular is my favorite) but may lack the ultimate room that heavier tents provide, especially noted in the width dimension. This floor plan pitches more easily in confined areas. The ventilation of the Quarterdome T2 Plus (and all Quarterdome tents) is outstanding and the 100% clip pole attachments help here. There is excellent mesh integration along with impressive and functional fly vents with stable velcro "standoffs" which are adjustable and keep them open. Zipper quality, overall stitiching, stress ...

Ledge Recluse tent: "$85 Wilderness Hotel" by Nutnfancy

This is an amazingly roomy tent. It provides an 48 sq feet of living area within a very portable 7 lbs 7 oz carry weight (and that's my upgraded carry to include tarp footprint and 10 MSR "Groundhog" tent stakes too; factory weight is listed at 6 lbs 6 oz). Add even more space for the two large vestibules that are provided by the tent fly. This roominess provided outstanding livability to us three backpackers on a wilderness adventure to high altitudes (me, son, dog). Three people could fit in a more cozy manner. Mesh integration is excellent. Pole attachment is via both clip and uncoated sleeve system. Several nights spent in the tent seem to indicate a dry, well-ventilated interior. Hard core snow and rain resistence was not tested on this trip but stake out provisions are provided for better tent strength. A very useful mesh gear loft is included along with four interior pockets (albeit they are not tightly sewn. Many parts of the Recluse are seam sealed but the bottom tent seam (catendary sewn) should be sealed by the user. The vestibules are well-executed and provide an incredible amount of dry gear storage area. The chosen light Mossy Green and light grey colors are excellent are provide more subdued camping and excellent, bright light filtration inside. But remember this is a sub-$100 tent so you will give up a few things in that choice. Close inspection of the "Recluse" tent model will reveal it to be a medium quality tent with compromises made to achieve that ...
