"Backpacking Tents" by Nutnfancy, Part 1

PART 1 of 3 ////////////// Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy. A minimalist tent tarp, bivy, or floor-less tent are some ways to avoid to some of those hassles. But my favorite option is a quality designed and constructed lightweight backpacking tent like the ones profiled in this Nutnfancy series of videos. Here I cover most of the design aspects and experience-based opinions on just such a tent. POUs, Firepower vs Mobility, Impact, Livability concerns, Longevity, Ventialtion, Maintenance, Sleeve and Pole Construction, Fabric Choices, Convenience Features, and buying sources are all covered in the series. It would be unrealistic and probably of limited use for me to review certain models since most are so shortlived in the marketplace. Instead I use category representatives and teach the features, construction, sizing, and the many considerations to arm the buyer with the knowledge to make the best purchase choice. Always buy out-of-season whenever possible to save big money; it's very possible to get a ultra-quality BP tent this way for well under $200. Take care of it and it will serve you and your family forever too. Location was the scenic and beautiful Rocky Mountains with Allie the Mountain Dog in tow. REI Quarter Dome T2+ tent: "Alpine Superstar" by Nutnfancy

When the hike is steep and long, experienced hikers will look to shave weight. A key target: your choice of shelter. Some will go minimalist with just a tarp or rain fly but I always prefer the tent for its comfort, bug, snake resistence, and total wind and weather proofness. So for these hikes a very light tent is in order. All manufacturers lowball their tent weights; I find them to be about 1 lb underrated. Therefore a quality 2-person tent often weighs about 6.5 lbs. The REI Quarterdome T2 Plus (extended version of the regular Quarterdome) breaks those ranks with a 5 lb tent (about 5 lbs 5 oz after stake, footprint, guyline upgrades that I do). For a tent providing 35 square feet of livability and 15 square feet of vesitbule storage area, that is an achievement (the T3 Plus will have 47+15 sq ft but is heavier). The Quarterdome T2 Plus packs small and carries easily in its compression strap equipped olive drab stuff sack. The 94"x54" living area is size efficient (rectangular is my favorite) but may lack the ultimate room that heavier tents provide, especially noted in the width dimension. This floor plan pitches more easily in confined areas. The ventilation of the Quarterdome T2 Plus (and all Quarterdome tents) is outstanding and the 100% clip pole attachments help here. There is excellent mesh integration along with impressive and functional fly vents with stable velcro "standoffs" which are adjustable and keep them open. Zipper quality, overall stitiching, stress ...

And setting one up is a breeze. To complete this How-To you will need: A dome tent A ground tarp Step 1: Lay down the ground tarp Find a clear, flat area to pitch your tent. Remove any rocks and debris, and then lay down the ground tarp. Step 2: Unfold the tent Unfold the tent on top of the ground tarp, with the door facing in the desired direction. Make sure all zippers are closed, except the door zipper. Set aside the rain fly. Step 3: Assemble the poles Assemble the poles according to instructions. In many cases, you can just shake the pole sections into place. Step 4: Insert the poles into the appropriate sleeves Push the poles through the fabric sleeves, taking care not to have the poles separate. Step 5: Insert one pole into its pockets Take one of the poles and place it into a corner pocket. Insert the other end of the pole into the pocket on the opposite corner of the tent. Repeat with the second pole. You may need another person to help with this. Tip: The two poles should cross ...

Nemo Equipment - Morpho 1P Tent

The Morpho 1P is the new solo version of Nemo Equipment's flagship Morpho 2P tent. Thanks to smaller diameter airbeams, the Morpho 1P inflates faster and packs considerably smaller than its bigger brother, but retains the same comfort. The Morpho 1P is an ideal tent for motorcycle adventure touring, offering riders a compact and lightweight (3.7lbs) alternative to traditional travel tents. Motorcycle campers who covet their elbow room can rejoice in the Morpho 1P's huge interior space. Non-breathable walls with an upper waterproof/breathable panel help reduce the weight, while smart crossbow-style vents provide good ventilation and funnel condensation out of the tent. An expansive rear vent also provides versatile ventilation options. Includes a Nemoid™ Foot Pump, watertight stuff sack, stakes, and repair kit. Ledge Recluse tent: "$85 Wilderness Hotel" by Nutnfancy

This is an amazingly roomy tent. It provides an 48 sq feet of living area within a very portable 7 lbs 7 oz carry weight (and that's my upgraded carry to include tarp footprint and 10 MSR "Groundhog" tent stakes too; factory weight is listed at 6 lbs 6 oz). Add even more space for the two large vestibules that are provided by the tent fly. This roominess provided outstanding livability to us three backpackers on a wilderness adventure to high altitudes (me, son, dog). Three people could fit in a more cozy manner. Mesh integration is excellent. Pole attachment is via both clip and uncoated sleeve system. Several nights spent in the tent seem to indicate a dry, well-ventilated interior. Hard core snow and rain resistence was not tested on this trip but stake out provisions are provided for better tent strength. A very useful mesh gear loft is included along with four interior pockets (albeit they are not tightly sewn. Many parts of the Recluse are seam sealed but the bottom tent seam (catendary sewn) should be sealed by the user. The vestibules are well-executed and provide an incredible amount of dry gear storage area. The chosen light Mossy Green and light grey colors are excellent are provide more subdued camping and excellent, bright light filtration inside. But remember this is a sub-$100 tent so you will give up a few things in that choice. Close inspection of the "Recluse" tent model will reveal it to be a medium quality tent with compromises made to achieve that ...

Zephyr 2 Tent Review

Reviewing the Zephyr 2 tent made by Alps Mountaineering. Purchased mine about 1.5-2 years ago and have enjoyed the tent. Does have some drawbacks to it, but certainly drawbacks I can either remedy or live with. Comes with sealed seams and urethane-coated fly and floor. Two alloy aluminum poles (and one small one for stability) with a clip to tent system help to set up quickly (does have small portion of the ol' sleeve for the poles. However only 1.5 to 2 feet worth). All mesh sides help for great ventilation. But where I go I always have the fly on as one never knows when the moisture will roll in overnight and very suddenly. Price at this point is pretty good. Just a quick search online came up with prices from $100 - $150. Not bad at all and I have no problems recommending the tent, especially at that price. I paid more for mine when it first came out...honestly I would jump all over this tent for $100.

Best Family Tent - Coleman Montana 8

Cheaper than most family tents, but actually keeps the rain out. I'm 30 minutes north of Seattle. Just unpacked and put up the tent this morning as soon as it arrived during an hour no rain break, then it started pooring. Eight hours of rain and it's still bone dry inside out in my backyard. I can't believe a 450mm shell/tent can do that. More than enough room for our whole family, me, wife, 13yr and 1yr old daughters. Two big foam beds and a play pen to boot. I searched reviews all over the net trying to find a decent family tent and hoped the reviews I read about his one were all true, and I am happy to say they are. Coleman FN rox. The rain fly that covers the outside of the door is part of the whole rain fly (all one piece), there is actually room for three chairs to stay dry under it (picture misleads that it is smaller). I was just out there smoking a cig thinking, America still has a few great companies left that mean well for their customers. The floor is not cheap tub tarp, it's decent. But, I still got two 6 x 8 cheap carpets @ lowes. Lesson learned from years of camping if you want your tent to last. The front door is pure genius. The zippers are re-inforced and glide like butter. But, if you don't want to add tons of wear on your zipper (and we all know a tent is useless when the door zipper breaks, unless of course it's a coleman with this design), just don't zip it, and let the hinge spring it lightly shut. And the factory well placed velcro hold it shut.

Heavy rain and wind in Haiti swept away dozens of tents in a camp outside the capital Port-au-Prince which houses thousands of homeless Haitians. Angry residents were forced to seek shelter elsewhere. The humber of people in relief tent camps has nearly doubled to 1.6 million, instead of shrinking. This comes as former US President Bill Clinton visited Haiti to mark the six month anniversary of January's earthquake which killed as many as 300000 people and left over a million homeless.

NYC Police Evict #OWS - Trashing Tents + Setting Off Tear Gas

WATCH LIVE NOW: blogs.aljazeera.net **NOT MY VIDEOS.** SOURCES: ( www.twitter.com ) yfrog.com yfrog.com "Police move in to evict Occupy protesters from New York park Police moved in to New York's Zuccotti Park early Tuesday morning, surprising many protesters who have camped there for almost two months. The New York Police Department would not comment on what prompted the eviction. But Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office said the move is temporary. "Occupants of Zuccotti should temporarily leave and remove tents and tarps. Protestors can return after the Park is cleared," the mayor's office said in a tweet at 1:34 am About 10 minutes later, the eviction had begun. The group's website video streamed the eviction under a banner headline that read, "NYPD is raiding Liberty Square." Liberty Square is the former name of the park. The Occupy call to action against unequal distribution of wealth and other causes began in Zuccotti in September before it spread nationwide and then globally. Here, the encampment has taken on an air of permanency, with tents covering the public plaza from one end to the other. Protesters say they are there for the long haul. No confrontations between police and protesters have taken place in New York in recent days. The Tuesday morning eviction comes ahead of plans by the protesters to "shut down" Wall Street on Thursday -- to mark the two-month anniversary of their movement." www.cnn.com
