GMC has unveiled the Sierra All Terrain HD concept, ahead of its debut at the North American International Auto Show. Designed to be one of the most capable trucks ever created, the All Terrian is a Sierra HD on steroids. Compared to the standard model, the concept is shorter, wider, and taller. Furthermore, it has been equipped custom control arms, Fox off-road shocks, front/rear jounce shocks, automatic locking differentials, and a beefy front stabilizer bar with electric disconnection. In terms of styling, the concept features a massive grille, bulging fender flares, LED lights and 20-inch aluminum wheels with 35-inch BFGoodrich KM2 tires. Out back, the bed has a composite liner and two compartments which house an air compressor and a 110-volt outlet. While no interior pictures were released, GM says the cabin has two-tone leather seats, satin chrome trim, and a next-generation navigation system with an 80 GB hard drive. Power is provided by a Duramax 6.6-liter V8 diesel engine with 397 hp (296 kW) and 765 lb-ft (1037 Nm) of torque. Performance specifications weren't released, but GM estimates the All Terrain would have a payload capacity of 2700 pounds (1225 kg) and a towing capacity of 13000 pounds (5896 kg).

A quick demo of a terrain/surface segment rendered using an adaptation of Greg Snook's "Simplified terrain using interlocking tiles" algorithm (Game Programming Gems 2) that runs entirely on the GPU using Direct3D 11. The application provides only a 20x20 grid of vertices and a height map and the Hull and Domain shaders generate everything else. This video is a modification on previously posted in that it uses [partitioning("fractional_odd")] rather than the "integer" partitioning mode. The upshot is that the transitions between LOD levels are smoother and the popping artifacts present in the previous video are now eliminated.
This is the "proof of concept" for my study thesis, an all-3D 3D terrain editor which enables you to simply interactively draw and manipulate terrains in 3D space. Since this is not based on height fields, there are no problems with steep hills, overhangs or even tunnels - that is all easily doable here. The data is stored in a hybrid data structure. The 3D space is partitioned in so-called "3D Tiles", and each 3D tile can be represented with material stacks or voxels. For editing and synthesizing the meshes (with a marching cubes algorithm), the 3D tiles are present in voxel format, and those tiles that are not in use are stored as material stacks to save a lot of memory. The material stacks are also used for saving terrains to and loading terrains from disk. Note that this is only a proof of concept. The little holes are from ambiguities in the original marching cubes algorithm that I didn't account for. Of course, that problem can be solved too.
