Where Goes the Neighborhood
A student documentary by Tescia Martlaro, Maria Chavez and Bera Sekhon features interviews with Los Angeles residents about the recent expansion in urban renewal projects around the city. The video analyzes the overlooked effects of gentrification, particularly the displacement of low-income families. Recent gentrification and urban renewal projects in Los Angeles have improved the quality of life in many areas. However, the increased rental prices and cost of living associated with gentrification have also resulted in the displacement of lower-income people, many of whom have been living in these areas for years. Landlords of these new/renovated apartments are driven by monetary incentives to evict tenants because they can profit from people who are willing and able to pay more for the same area. As a result of these high rent prices, residents worry about the possibility of overcrowding apartments or even homelessness because many of them cannot afford to live in these newly developed areas.
