NEA's Trenholm Award to Willie Worsley

Willie Worsley was a starter for Texas Western in 1966 in one of the most momentous college basketball games ever played—Kentucky v. Texas Western. The NCAA Championship was at stake. All 5 Kentucky starters were white and all 5 starting for Texas Western were Black — a first for the NCAA. Texas Western beat Kentucky and in 2006 the movie, Glory Road, celebrated Worsley and his teammates who broke a major color barrier. Willie went on to play in the NBA and later turned to education. He was been an inspiration for New York youth with his positive additude and has helped many go on to college and successful careers. On July 1 he received the H. Councill Trenholm Memorial Award at NEA's annual Human and Civil Rights Gala.

Fighting Racism College Basketball Finals (History's Playlist)-Sports

At the peak of the civil rights movement and racism, five all black starters faced five all white starters in the NCAA college basketball finals. March 19, 1966, history was made when an unknown Texas Western starting lineup, consisting entirely of African American players, took the floor verses the all white number 1 ranked Kentucky Wildcat team. Never in history had an all black lineup started in a championship game, or any college basketball game for that matter. The US was in the midst of the civil rights movement and racial hostilities were high as the two teams battled for the national championship. In the end, Texas Western upset the Wildcats who were led by a young Pat Riley. This was the first basketball championship in Texas Western's history. Corrine Corrina - Dave Alexander - western swing music

Corrine Corrina, Dave Alexander www.DaveAlexander.com Dave and his Big Texas Western Swing Band this clip was recorded May 6, 2011 at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts in Gainesville, Texas on the NCTC campus. "Corrine, Corrina" is a 12 bar country blues song in the AAB form. "Corrine, Corrina" was first recorded by Bo Chatmon (Brunswick 7080, December 1928). However, it was not copyrighted until 1932 by Chatmon and his publishers, Mitchell Parish and J. Mayo Williams. The song is familiar for its opening verse; Corrine, Corrina, where you been so long? Corrine, Corrina, where you been so long? I ain't had no lovin', since you've been gone. Prior to World War II, Bob Wills adapted "Corrine, Corrina" to a Western swing dance song. Following his recording with The Texas Playboys on April 15, 1940, the song entered the standard repertoire of all Western swing bands, influencing the adoption of "Corrine, Corrina" by Cajun bands and later by individual country artists. "His many fans already know this, but for those who don't, Dave Alexander is the real deal, the genuine article when it comes to the unique brand of music known as Texas swing, A three-time Grammy nominee, Dave and his band are top-drawer professionals on a par with groups like Asleep at the Wheel—which, by the way, Dave often appears with and performs."

100 Seasons of Utah Utes Basketball - Moment 16

The 1966 Runnin' Utes went 7-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, including a 97-85 victory over New Mexico that clinched the league title, in 1966. But in that game, Utah lost its power forward George Fisher with a broken femur. Coach Jack Gardner and his staff were more than a little concerned as the Utes headed for Los Angeles and the NCAA Western Regional without a key starter. But Jerry Chambers made up for the loss of Fisher by continuing the torrid pace he had set late in the regular season. Chambers scored 40 points to lead Utah over Pacific in the opening round of the tournament. Utah point guard Rich Tate really came alive in the NCAA Tournament as well. His 16 points helped the Utes get by Oregon State 70-64. When Tate wasn't scoring, he was feeding Chambers - who scored 33 points - the ball. Chambers was named MVP of the Western Regional. Then, it was on to College Park, Maryland for the Final Four. The Utes didn't know it, but they were about to become part of history. The Final Four field also included national powers Kentucky and Duke. The fourth team was little-known (but not for long) Texas Western. Utah opened against Texas Western, which made history in the championship game winning the title with an all African-American lineup. But it was Utah's Jerry Chambers who stole the show a bit in the semifinals. Merv Jackson (Utah's shooting guard) took a little pressure off Chambers, also playing well. Despite Jackson and Chambers play and a little help from ...
