
Pete Anthony Godinez was inducted into the 2011 Cal Poly SLO Hall of Fame. This is the powerful, humorous and amazing story of a example of a wonderul and amazing human Soul. Pete Godinez Sr., an outstanding track and field athlete at Santa Maria High School, was recruited as a high hurdler, but made his mark in boxing at Cal Poly. He earned silver medals in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiates as a sophomore and junior in 1955 and 1956 and claimed a bronze medal in the NCAA Championships at Madison, Wisc., in 1956. Voted Cal Poly's Boxer of the Year in 1956, Godinez went on to graduate as an electronics engineer in 1957 and for the next 43 years worked as an electronics engineer in military weaponry, personal computers and automation systems. He co-founded a company in automated inspection systems, retiring in 2000. Godinez earned numerous team awards at Cal Poly. He earned the track team's High Point Trophy as a freshman in 1954, won the Cal Poly Novice Boxing Tournament in 1954, was named Cal Poly's outstanding sophomore boxer in 1955 and earned the "Outstanding Runner-Up" trophy at the 1955 NCAA finals in Pocatello, Idaho. Godinez was inducted into the Guadalupe Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and his son, Peter, Jr., competed in track and field at Cal Poly, breaking the school decathlon record, placing fourth in the 1980 NCAA Division II National Championships in the decathlon and also excelling in the high hurdles.
