It was also their first chart single in the UK, reaching #31. The lyrics tell a vague story about a man looking for a girl in a forest. He hears her calling for him, and as he chases her, he suddenly stops and realizes that he is lost and that the girl is not there. The song is fairly upbeat compared to the other material on the album, and Lol Tolhurst's machine-like steady beat together with Simon Gallup's minimalistic bassline gives this nervous chase more depth and keeps the song on the edge of a frantic groove until the end. Though not their biggest hit, it is regarded by many fans and critics as one of the best examples of The Cure's sound, particularly their use of chorusing effects. The song is also notable for securing the band its first slot on BBC's Top of the Pops. The track has been re-recorded a number of times by The Cure. In 1990 the track was re-recorded and remixed as the "Tree mix" on the band's "Mixed Up" album.

The members of The Cure first started releasing music in the late 1970s. Their first album, Three Imaginary Boys (1979), and early singles placed them as part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. Three Imaginary Boys is English rock band The Cure's debut album, released in May 1979 by Fiction Records. It was later released in the United States, with a slightly different song line-up, as Boys Don't Cry. "Foxy Lady", a soundcheck with vocals sung by Michael Dempsey, was not supposed to be on the album and was removed for the American release. Smith has stated that "songs like 'Object' and 'World War' and our cover of 'Foxy Lady' were [Chris Parry's] choice, even though they were diabolical and I hated them" The record company decided which songs were put on the album, as well as the cover artwork, without Robert Smith's consent. Disintegration is the eighth studio album by English alternative rock band The Cure, released on 1 May 1989 by Fiction Records. The record marks a return to the introspective and gloomy gothic rock style the band had established in the early 1980s. As he neared the age of thirty, vocalist and guitarist Robert Smith felt an increased pressure to follow up on the group's pop successes with a more enduring work.
