Rake - Townes Van Zandt

Townes Van Zandt at his best. "Rake" never fails to move me, and I've been dying to make a video for this one. I tagged the URL of the Townes Van Zandt website onto the end of the video. If you buy your Townes stuff there the money goes to the family instead of to some faceless corporation.

Townes Van Zandt Pancho and Lefty

Live - Rear View Mirror CD Living on the road my friend Was gonna keep you free and clean Now you wear your skin like iron Your breath's as hard as kerosene You weren't your mama's only boy But her favorite one it seems She began to cry when you said goodbye And sank into your dreams Pancho was a bandit boys His horse was fast as polished steel Wore his gun outside his pants For all the honest world to feel Pancho met his match you know On the deserts down in Mexico Nobody heard his dying words That's the way it goes All the federales say They could have had him any day They only let him hang around Out of kindness I suppose Lefty he can't sing the blues All night long like he used to The dust that Pancho bit down south Ended up in Lefty's mouth The day they laid poor Pancho low Lefty split for Ohio Where he got the bread to go There ain't nobody knows All the federales say They could have had him any day They only let him slip away Out of kindness I suppose The poets tell how Pancho fell Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold So the story ends we're told Pancho needs your prayers it's true, But save a few for Lefty too He just did what he had to do Now he's growing old A few gray federales say They could have had him any day They only let him go so wrong Out of kindness I suppose TVZ Records, LLC, dist by Fat Possum Records www.fatpossum.com

Townes Van Zandt - Kathleen

From the album Legend It's plain to see, the sun won't shine today But I ain't in the mood for sunshine anyway Maybe I'll go insane I got to stop the pain Or maybe I'll go down to see Kathleen. A swallow comes and tells me of her dreams She says she'd like to know just what they mean I feel like I could die As I watch her flying by Ride the north wind down to see Kathleen. Stars hang high above, the oceans roar The moon is come to lead me to her door There's crystal across the sand And the waves, they take my hand. Soon I'm gonna see my sweet Kathleen. Soon I'm gonna see my sweet Kathleen.

LUNGS (1973) by Townes Van Zandt live at the Old Quarter

Townes Van Zandt is a singer songwriter, who did not have the success he deserved in his lifetime, but who now is recognised as being one of the best. He is perhaps best known for his song 'Pancho and Lefty'. That and 'Waiting Around To Die' are probably my favourites and are featured to good effect in the film 'Heartworn Highways'. This song, 'Lungs', is up there with them. It was recorded live at the Old Quarter, Houston, just Townes and his guitar. Anyone wanting to buy their first Townes CD, I would recommend that one. Check out Townes Van Zandt Central for CDs and merchandise, as it benefits Townes' family. The following is summarised from Wikipedia: While alive, Van Zandt was labeled as a cult musician: though he had a small and devoted fanbase, he never had a successful album or single, and even had difficulty keeping his recordings in print. In 1983, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard covered his song "Pancho and Lefty", scoring a number one hit on the Billboard country music charts. Despite achievements like these, the bulk of his life was spent touring various dive bars, often living in cheap motel rooms, backwoods cabins and on friends' couches. Van Zandt was notorious for his drug addictions, alcoholism, and his tendency to tell tall tales. He suffered from manic depression, and attempts to treat it with insulin shock therapy erased much of his long-term memory. He died on New Years Day 1997 from health problems stemming from years of substance abuse. The 2000s ...

Townes Van Zandt-Loretta from Live at the Old Quarter

This is hands down the best recorded version of this song. Frankly I am not a big fan of any of the other versions and were it not for this one I'd say it was one of his more forgettable tunes. Thankfully, this one exists. I can't say enough good about it. The happy upbeat playing (very rare for him if you know anything at all about Townes) captures the mood perfectly and his voice as a good as it ever as (which at its peak is phenomenal). This was the first released version of the song which has always made me wonder why (or who) changed the great line "keep my on your mind awhile, i'll be back, babe, to make you smile" to "keep my on your mind awhile, i'm comin home im comin home." Really what was the problem with the original line, why dumb it down? Anyway, I'll stop rambling and let you enjoy one of my favorite songs from one of the best live albums ever made.

Townes Van Zandt - To Live Is To Fly (live)

Townes Van Zandt - To Live Is To Fly Won't say I love you babe Won't say I need you babe But, I'm gonna get you babe And I will not do you wrong Livin's mostly wastin' time I waste my share of mine But it never feels too good So let's don't take too long You're soft as glass And I'm a gentle man We got the sky to talk about And the world to lie upon. Days up and down they come Like rain on a conga drum Forget most, remember some But don't turn none away Everything is not enough Nothin' is too much to bear Where you been is good and gone All you keep is the gettin' there To live is to fly Low and high So shake the dust off of your wings And the sleep out of your eyes It's goodbye to all my friends It's time to go again Think on all the poetry And the pickin' down the line I'll miss the system here The bottom's low and the treble's clear But it don't pay to think too much On things you leave behind I may be gone But it won't be long I will be a-bringin' back the melody And the rhythm that I find We all got holes to fill Them holes are all that's real Some fall on you like a storm Sometimes you dig your own But choice is yours to make And time is yours to take Some dive into the sea Some toil upon the stone To live is to fly Low and high, So shake the dust off of your wings And the sleep out of your eyes So shake the dust off of your wings And the tears out of your eyes
