Molly Jones Gray is working hard to make sure that her toddler Paxton has a safe and healthy home. This Seattle mother and her husband Zack are keenly aware of what's in the food, toys and cleaning products in their home. "You can't tell a baby what is a food, what's not a food, what's a toy, what's not a toy," Gray said. "Because everything is a food and everything is a toy to them." A wide variety of harmful toxins can be easily ingested throughout an average American home. The Grays first learned of environmental health risks when there was a problem in their attempts to become pregnant. Repeated miscarriages caused them seek out information on how commercial products and chemical substances in their home might impact their reproductive health. Taking part in a study conducted by the Washington Toxics Coalition (WTC), the Grays discovered that their home was filled with compounds that could adversely affect their unborn children. With levels of mercury and other toxins in her system higher than any other woman in the study researchers determined that Gray's own body posed a polluted environment for a growing baby. " The women that we test had between 11 and 14 of these toxic chemicals in their bodies," said Erika Schreder at WTC and so that means that the fetus was exposed to toxic chemicals that can lead to early puberty, reduced sperm production, and learning disabilities."

Mike is the co-founder of Earth First!, Rainforest Action Network, Ruckus Society, and was a Yippie! once upon a time: Standing in the front yards of local resident Sandy Jenkins, I can look out over the spill. Except it wasnt a spill and it wasnt a dam failure. A fifty foot high pile of toxic waste collapsed and took the dam with it. Except it wasnt a even a dam and it sure wasnt a pond, as the TVA calls it. It was a berm made of the same toxic material that was in the pile. The Tennessee Valley Authority, which built and manages the 50 year old plant, had covered it up with red clay, planted grass on it and some exotic pine trees at the base, and from Sandys yard it hadnt look very threatening. But he knew what was in that pile and he and other locals had been complaining that it was leaking for years. TVA responded by installing some more pipes to drain the seepage into the Emory River. Still, when the pile collapsed, no dam could have held it back. It was supersaturated and highly unstable. The dam was pushed across the river largely intact, across acres of riparian forests, and like a bulldozer scrapping everything in its path, it pushed what was a sanctuary for wildlife up against the hills above the opposite side of slough. Killed were not only fish, but frogs, turtles, rabbits, mink, muskrat and all of the wildlife you would expect to find in a slough where three creeks joining a large southern Appalachian River <b>...</b>

Assemblymember Ma says BPA, which is an artificial hormone used in shatter proof plastic baby bottles and sippy cups, has been linked to a variety of problems including early puberty, obesity, breast cancer and autism. Alcoa, the giant aluminum producer, operates a huge smelter on the Ohio River near Newburgh, IN. According to USEPA's Toxic Release Inventory, the plant emits 4240432 lbs. of "point source" toxic air emissions from their single facility. compare that to all the industry in Cool County, IL, or Chicago which emits a relatively small 3490072 lbs.. The plant, nearing fifty years old, has been emitting these chemical throughout its history. Those emissions contain all sorts of chemistry including dioxin and other known cancer causing chemicals. Sherman, who is a part of the regional group, Airaware which seeks to inform people about their quality of the air in the region, seized on a recent report in USA Today which showed that all schools in Warrick County were at high risk due to the massive amount of toxins released by Alcoa and other indutries in the area. Eleven activists entered chemical company Orica's Botany Bay plant to label and lock down highly toxic and carcinogenic waste - hexachlorobenzene (HCB) - destined for Denmark. Orica is responsible for at least 16000 tonnes of the banned carcinogen HCB. Instead of dealing with the waste itself, Orica is proposing to transport a total of 6100 tonnes of HCB, in multiple shipments, to Nyborg in Denmark for incineration. It has no accepted plan for the remaining 10000 tonnes. Other toxic chlorinated pollutants have leeched from the Botany Bay site, poisoning groundwater for thousands of Sydney residents. The shipment is in contravention of both international and domestic law. Under the UN Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, HCB waste can only be exported to another OECD country under the exceptional circumstance where there is no technology available in-country to treat and destroy the waste.
