Last week I took the train all the way to Berlin from London. It's a truly great journey which will become a direct link through Deutsche Bahn from 2015. It was scheduled to begin from 2013 but delays in the production of new rolling stock has put it back two years. On this occasion I took the Eurostar to Brussels, ICE3 from Brussels to Cologne and another ICE from Cologne to Berlin. The most challenging aspect of this project was a severe cold I developed staying overnight at my usual shabby choice of London hotel. I arrived in Berlin feeling pretty rough, and having to endure temperatures which fell to -- 18c (that's right, minus 18 celcius). My thanks go to Stefan Heulle of Deutsche Bahn, Nicole Roebel of Berlin Tourism and the Meininger Hotel for helping me with this project. The Meininger Hotel is blissfully close to Berlin Hauptbahnhof, literally 200 metres from the front entrance, and the only hotel for miles around, so it was an especially welcome sight on my eventual arrival when the outside temperature was at its lowest. I would also add that Berlin Hbf is the most incredible rail station I have ever seen, and it's worth making the trip just to see it. Almost as impressive is Liege Rail Station, super-modern, and a real eye opener. Here we have short time at London Paddington on the morning of the 4th May 2011. In this video, we see various passenger trains arriving and departing the station, with Class 165/166's, HST's, Class 332, Class 360 and London Underground trains seen. Part 1 of a film showing time separated contrasting views of London's Bank underground railway station. This film show the Central Line and the Northern Line. The Central Line sequences predominate, and include mention of the platforms which at one end are very sharply curved - for many years the automated 'mind the gap' announcements warning passengers of the resulting large gap between the platform and the train were a distinctive feature of this station. Also seen is the memorial statue outside the station / next to The Royal Exchange of James Henry Greathead (1844-1896), inventor of the Greathead Tunneling Shield as used when constructing London's deep level tube railways. Greathead was Chief Engineer on the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) which is now part of the Northern Line and included a station at the nearby King William Street (now closed). The bronze statue was unveiled on 17th January 1994. It is 10 feet high and is by James Butler, RA. The plinth on which it stands is in fact a ventilation shaft for the Northern Line beneath it.

This EM gauge layout represents the station in the period from 1945 to the end of the LMS on January 1st 1948. All 11 platforms are included and the area modelled is from the University right up to Lime Street itself. A number of the university buildings at the right hand end of the layout are based on actual buildings still in existence today. Act 1: Bean goes to Derrick's barber shop for a haircut. Just as he is about to have the cut, the barber has to take a long telephone call. While he waits, three other customers come in assuming Mr. Bean is the new hairdresser, and he ends up cutting their hair very awfully (giving a mother's child an ape-like haircut (which the child is thrilled with), cutting off a man's pony tail, and replacing an older man's elderly hair with hair cut from long ago). They later return and blame Derrick for their strange haircuts, while Mr. Bean sneaks off hiding his face under a calendar of Prince Charles (with the customer whose hair was replaced with the cut hair greeting him as such because he had his glasses off). Act 2: Bean goes to a fair and cheats at the indoor games. First, he plays the Electro wire by switching it off at the plug. Then he plays "Hit the Headmaster" (in which the late George Webb is the "headmaster") and gets a bit carried away, and starts throwing objects like canned peas and cereal boxes at the "headmaster" (he almost throws a chair, but is stopped thanks to a nearby teacher). Later, Bean enters a dog show and uses his Teddy as his pet; he wins a huge bone but gets a jar of honey for Teddy, throwing the bone back into the tent and creating mayhem among the kids and the dogs. Act 3: Bean goes to a railway station. Unfortunately, he has lost his ticket, and decides to sneak past the guards. After numerous failed attempts to sneak past the guards, he hides <b>...</b>

The HipShakers Featuring BottleNeck Blake and BluesHarp Counsel The Hipshakers feature Adam "BottleNeck" Blake on guitar and vocals and Steve "BluesHarp" Counsel on Harmonica and vocals, they could best be described as London's answer to Buddy Guy and Junior Wells although they cover a wide breadth of blues influences. Blake is an amazing lead guitarist in the great British Blue Boom tradition completely at home in the Chicago style whether it be Elmore James, JB Hutto, Jimmy Rogers or Magic Sam he is also a major exponent of the delta blues slide style of Mississippi Fred McDowell, a long time sideman in the Errol Linton Blues Band, Blake has toured extensively and recorded several albums. Steve "BluesHarp" Counsel was born and raised in London but lived and worked in the states for over 20 years, he formed and led the Los Angeles Blues band the Homewreckers (by the way none of the bands that are calling themselves that on myspace etc have any connection with this particular band). The HomeWreckers at times featured Craig Ross (Lenny Kravitz Band) and Marc Ford (The Black Crowes) and Eddie Munoz (Plimsouls). They released a critically acclaimed CD "Out Of The Shadow's," on New York indie Viceroy Records in 1994 produced by Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, which was also released in Europe though Viceroys German based subsidiary. Ira Robbins Of New York Newsday describe Counsel as a "Harmonica Powerhouse".
Finally I succeeded getting to London after my one day delay in Salzburg. After arriving late on May 9, 2008, I got a good night's sleep at the Zetter Hotel, a hip boutique hotel in the Clerkenwell area. The next day, after a delicious breakfast, my travel partner Andrea and I got going early to start our discoveries. We walked past historic medieval St. John's Gate and admired the Victorian era Smithfield Market. From here I took my first ride on the Tube (London's famous subway system) to the historic St. Pancras Railway Station which is now the terminal for the Eurostar Trains, connecting London with the Continent. We then walked over to neighbourhing King's Cross Railway Station where we checked out Platform 9 3/4 of Harry Potter fame. Our next destination was the Portobello Market, an ecclectic mix of fresh vegetables, fruit, baked goods, enticing aromas from all sorts of delicious freshly made street food, funky clothes, furs and antiques. After our interview with Michael Williams, one of the organizers of the Notting Hill Carnival (a Caribbean-style carnival and Europe's biggest street party) we walked through the serene streets of Notting Hill and Kensington before we embarked on a brief tour of Little Beirut, a heavily middle-Eastern influenced area on Edgeware Road. A tube ride later we arrived at Hyde Park Corner where to my disappointment nobody was giving any speeches or ranting about anything. This special edition episode takes a detailed look at the spectacularly restored St. Pancras station. The station is called St. Pancras International because it now serves as the gateway to Paris and Brussels via the Eurostar trains and the Channel Tunnel. This episode closes in on the details of the 150 year old architecture with its modern embellishments, especially the restored roof with more than 14000 glass panels. We also get to see the art that has been added to the station for its November 2007 re-opening. Best of all we get to see the whole station in action as a hub for passengers - thousands of them - making their way around the station, to and from trains, and even shopping in the basement mall. St Pancras train station was designed by William Barlow in 1863 with construction commencing in 1866. The famous Barlow train shed arch spans 240 feet and is over 100 feet high at its apex. On its completion in 1868 it became the largest enclosed space in the world. This restored arch is awesome to view - especially when standing next to the statue of St. John Betjeman. The greatest threat to the station came in 1966 with plans to amalgamate King's Cross and St Pancras. However public opinion had been sharpened by the demolition of Euston in 1962.
