Not an overly exciting video but if you are thinking of one yourself then this will be informative for you. So if it isn't working very well on sapphires how will it work on gold? This video is the first time we have used the trommel on just the golden good stuff and it works very well. Still some bugs to figure out. Made several modifications to help the machine work more efficiently. Be sure to check out my other mining videos. At this point I think I am one of the only ones showing a reverse helix tromel in operational detail grinding away on actual material.

This is the start of my first attempt at a reverse helix trommel. The sound quality fades in and out, Kinda sucks Sorry. It has 1/2" expanded metal "Pacific metal $20" screen tube set inside an 8" pvc pipe union cut in half Got it for $2 and habitat for humanity. The support wheels are 3" plastic. they will work for now. A 12vdc 2 speed wind shield washer motor, it spins at 30 and 20 rpm with a 5" drive V belt pulley. The stand is 3/4" square tube construction. Originally for a highbanker I built. I just added to the existing adjustable frame work to add the screen trommel. The most critical part of the project so far has been the wheel and pulley alignment. It walked a lot at first then I centered and leveled/aligned the wheels as close as I could with a level and tape measure/spacer stick. The drive pulley just took time getting the angle to match which I did with nuts until it stopped walking. I ground a grove in the PVC union to help hold the belt in place, That was fun with a hand saw and grinder while it was spinning. I will update this again when I get to the reverse helix construction.

Once again we venture in to the hills above Virginia City Montana to work a small but productive gold claim in beautiful Alder Gulch.. The material was hauled back to my place because of easy access to water, power, food and beer. The trommel is something we made over the winter primarily for sapphire mining. Using it to pull a little gold was part of an extensive shakedown period before heading to hell and gone looking for little stones. The barrel is a reverse helix. Virginia and Nevada cities are great places for the whole family to visit. If you stop by one of the weeks I am around I would be glad to take you up into the woods and look for some color!

I used two buckets, 20 feet of 1" PVC, fittings, PVC cement, 1/2" #19 mesh, and small bags of nuts and bolts. It can be used for classifying material for your sluice or drywasher. It weighs 12 lbs.

I have gone over to the dark side of soil sieves and seccumbed to the awesome power of the rorary sieve. This is my first attempt which has 12mm X 25mm mesh in the 1st section then 25mm X 25mm mesh in the second section with everything else falling out the end. The motor is a 1500 RPM off an old table saw which once geared down via the flywheel above the sieve gives an RPM of 35 on the mesh drum.

Test of the California Sluice Box Company hand cranked trommel on my favorite creek
I'm new at making movies but here it is. Take your time with the grinder, the smother you turn the tube the better the line will turn out. If you can stabilize the grinder to minimize wobbling even better. I spaced it at 3/8" to compensate for blade width. After cutting it is about a 1/4" thick coil. Calculating coil length: Length of tube (30") / ( coil width (.375 (3/8")) + space between coils (2") =2.375) = 12.63 coils x .375 = 4.7" of tube cut into coil. Just takes some time and patients. Remember to use extreme caution with the grinder It can jump and hurt you very badly. Ware safety goggles and a dust mask, it is very dusty. Next is the installing and adhering the coil inside the tube, coming soon to a station near you.

Some more winter fun. This video was taken in November 2009. I just finally got around to putting it together. Fitst we came in with a backhoe and set the trommel in place. Then since they say you find gold in your own back yard we dug down. We found bedrock at 12 feet and it was covered with visable fine gold. I scraped some of the bottom material into a gold pan and it covered the bottom of the pan with 60 to 100mesh gold. This sample hole assayed out at 1.6ozt per ton on bedrock. Definitely profitable. We estimate that there is well over 100 oz down there with a varying depth from 14ft on the North to 3 ft of overburden up on the South side. We also panned directly outside of the door on bedrock is 3" below the surface and found gold in every sample hole. Lots of fun and it has been keeping us busy.
