Nadishana - Tsaaj Nplaim (Raj Nplaim, Mèo) flute from Hmong people of Laos

You can buy this instrument here shop.nadishana.com Finally Tsaaj Nplaim (Mèo) 'free reed' flute from Hmong people of Laos available at our shop! This is limited offer, just seven of them are in stock. Nadishana added one extra hole for the left thumb to each flute to extend the range, otherwise the native tuning is left as it is. Tsaaj Nplaim has very haunting, tender sound, very special and instantly recognizable. The flute made from bamboo. The approach of Hmong people to playing is very different from our western approach and very unique: for example this instrument used by them to tell stories (literally). When player performs the audience knows what story is about. Note: the tone reference of each flute is different. on the video Nadishana plays on two of them.

4th Race trio @ Zimt and Zunder (Nadishana)

4th-race.com With David Kuckhermann and Tobias Fleischer. The style of the Trio "4th Race" could be described as contemporary ethnic music. Three unusual musicians had found each other to search musical paths besides the mainstream. All of band members are experienced composers / performers in direction of world music. The band-sound is really unique because the musicians are drastically experimenting in undiscovered field of multi-cultural fusion. They use a wide range of music instruments of the world: mandola (Italy), bansuri (India), kalyuka (Russia), tsaaj nplaim (Laos), tamboura (Bulgaria), gaida (Bulgaria), khomus (Siberia), morsing (India), kou xiang (China), berimbao (Brazil), tonbak (Iran), riq (Lebanon), frame drums, darbouka (Turkey), cajon (Spain), tar (Sudan), udu (Africa), fretless and fretted bass, acoustic bass, double bass. Inspired by the music and instruments of different cultures something new and original is created.

6th Rhythm - Tus Kawg (eng sub)

Song: Tus Kawg Artist: 6th Rhythm Movie: Innocent Steps I made this for a contest that 6th Rhythm was having. It's sort of a last minute thing I put together from 12 AM to 1 AM because the deadline is 5PM today and I have a performance at San Diego New Year. As with my other videos, the English translations are not the best, but they're the best I could do for now. I didn't grow up using Hmong metaphors or big Hmong words. I speak more English than Hmong. Update: I won! Thanks for those who voted. Update 04.08.09 - Yeah, still waiting for that CD that I supposedly won. Maybe it's lost in the mail because I wrote them about it a month after not getting it and supposedly it was on its way.

Playing the Hmong flute - Tshuab Raj Hliav Ncauj

Ger Xiong (Tooj Ntxawg Xyooj) performs on the raj hliav ncauj in a clip from "Speaking Musically," a 2001 documentary about traditional Hmong music. The raj hliav ncauj is a flute similar in design to a recorder. Other names for similar instruments include: raj ntsia and raj pum liv. Some people use the words interchangeably, while other use only one or two of the terms. In this performance, Ger plays in a variety styles and scales or what are called suab. With the exception of opening and concluding melodic formulas, the pitches of the melody communicate words. For the most part, one equals one word (Hmong is basically a monosyllabic language). The shape and rhythm of the melody follows the word tones and rhythm of the words Ger is saying through the instrument. The words in this performance are based on typical expressions of loss and loneliness common to a variety of Hmong verbal arts. Ger combines these phrases extemporaneously, based on what he wants to say at the moment, creating long strings of ideas that flow together over the course of the performance.
