Tteok (떡) [100 Icons of Korean Culture]

Where there are Koreans, there is always tteok. Tteok is a representative food of Korea. It is always present in Korean people's lives, right from birth. What does tteok mean to a Korean and what significance does it have in Korean people's lives? A seodang, or a traditional school, located at the foot of Jiri Mtn. in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province is celebrating "Chaekrye." It is the custom of serving tteok to reward the students' hard work upon completing a book. Tteok is traditionally made by steaming, hitting, frying or boiling, and these traditional methods are still used in a tteok village in Gangwon Province. To Koreans, tteok is a symbol of life and human relations. Indeed, there are many folk tales and proverbs that mention tteok. Different types of tteok represent different milestones in life and each hold its own meaning. Regardless of the occasion, whether it is of joy, anger, sorrow or pleasure, tteok is always there, as a part of people's lives.

Rice, the bread and butter of the Korean table is explored from Busan, Korea's second largest city, all the way to Seoul. Along the way, Marja and her dear friend, the actress Heather Graham, learn about instant rice, tteok (a pasta-like ingredient made of ground rice) and visit Bibigo, a new chain of contemporary restaurants serving fresh variations of bibimbap. Back in New York, Marja and Jean-Georges create their own version of bibimbap, along with sushi-like kimbap, kimchi fried rice and JG's famous ginger fried rice. #969 Carrot Soup

Sunday Kitchen #127 Carrot Soup Mochi seems to have hundreds of different names - depending on the country. Since I'm in Japan I would call this "Korean mochi" in English. But in Korea I guess it's called: tteok, ddeock, duk, dduk, ddeog, or thuck. en.wikipedia.org What do you call it? This Korean mochi tastes a bit different from Japanese mochi ... the texture is a bit different. Less sticky, more chewy perhaps. Both are delicious! Korean Snacks - Rice Cakes made with a big hammer!

Chris and Choonae went to Jirisan and found a local fair and Beauty Pageant where they were making a Korean snack called injeolmi. It's rice with a savory green plant, pulverized in a stone bowl with a large wooden mallet. Well, they just thought it was the most interesting thing the way this snack was made, so Chris took a turn with the mallet. Then he sat with the ladies as they rolled it in bean flour and cut it into pieces. Chris bought a pack and tried it. It had a nice flavor, but it wasn't to his liking. No sugar or salt. Choonae liked it, of course. "Poor, deluded Child" as Batman says.
