That film, however, was designed for a unique audience, and I felt its overall length was limiting its appeal here. So I've repackaged it as one of my Explainer episodes. I Hope you enjoy. People have been asking for the math. So here it is. The Sun's core temp is ~13.6 MK. For hydrogen nuclei the Coulomb barrier is roughly 0.1 MeV. This corresponds to a temperature in excess of 1 GK! Luckily, tunneling and the distribution of speeds among nuclei lower the actual temperature required. So without tunneling even the Sun's core isn't hot enough for fusion. Electron Tunneling explained by Nobel Prize winner Ivar Giaever. Wave-mechanical tunneling, quantum mechanical tunneling. John Fisher's tennis ball example is given. Giaever's experiments in the tunneling effect led to winning the prize in 1973. The work was done at General Electric. It is an evanescent wave coupling effect in the context of quantum mechanics. particles can pass through solid objects without making a hole. This is a response to Dhorpatan's video: The Argument from Quantum Mechanics, for the Non-Existence of the Christian God: www.youtube.com Simply put, premise two in the video is wrong. Though of course I would not expect anyone to know this. As it turns out minds can and do control quantum tunneling all of the time. If it were not so we would all be on the floor having seizures right now. A nerve signal is transmitted through dendrite barriers which are too thick to allow for classical mechanical actions. The conclusion therefore is that the nerve impulse must be transmitted via quantum tunneling. In particular neuroscientist John Eccles discovered that a hydrogen atom tunnels through the potential barrier of the dendrite wall to cross the synapse and into the other dendrite. For those interested here is his paper on the topic with Friedrich Beck, entitled "Quantum aspects of brain activity and the role of consciousness:" www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Before the tunneling event occurs the wavefunction stacks up very neatly near the wall of the first dendrite, in a controlled on command sort of way. In quantum mechanics this is highly unusual because it indicates controlled non-probabilistic quantum activity. This however does not violate quantum mechanics as once wavefunction collapse has occured the probability amplitudes are stacked up in a deterministic Dirac spike.
