ALTAI culture - Tuva - In memory of Kül Tegin - Külteginin Hiygizi

Official orcherstra of the tuvan ministry of culture. The song is dedicated to Kul Tigin (Kül (Köl, Gül, Göl) Tigin (Tegin)[Prince Kul] Khan Bengü İnançu Apa Tarkan) 闕特勒(685 - 731 or 732 CE) was a famous general of the Second Kaganate of "Kök Türük". He was a second son of legendary Ilterish Shad (Kutlugh) and the younger brother of Bilge Kagan. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kül-Tigin Monument translation of the stele (found in Mongolia) in memory of Kül Tigin, which included inscriptions in both the Turkic and Chinese, erected to his memory. Here an example of the inscription: Eastern face When the blue sky above and the dark earth below were created, between the two were created the sons of men. Above the sons of men were upraised my ancestors Boumin kagan and Istemi kagan. Having become masters, they governed and established the empire and the institutions of the Turkic people. In the four corners of the world they had many enemies, but making expeditions with armies, they submitted and pacified many peoples in the four corners of the world; they made them bow their heads and bend their knees; they made them settle in front (ie, towards the east) as far as the forest of Kadirkan, and in the rear (ie, to the west) as far as the Iron Gate. So far between these two (farthest points) the Blue Turks extended themselves as sovereigns. Siberia: Tuva

SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP: Siberia, Tuva This beautiful, haunting melody represents the development of Christian music among the Tuvan People of Siberia. The background music includes various styles of "khoomei" or "throat singing". khoomei (low vocal pedal tone), sygyt (high whistle-sounding voice part), and kargyraa (low raspy voice part). The stringed instruments are the tobshuur (2-string Altai/Mongolian instrument of banjo-like tonal quality), chanzy (3-string Tuvan instrument similar to the dobro), morin huur (Mongolian cello), and igil (Tuvan cello), all of which are indigenous sounds that move the heart of the Tuvan People. As a culture they are closely related to the Mongolians. Paul Pena - Tuva Farewell

Paul Pena (1950 -- 2005) was a blind American singer, songwriter and guitarist of Cape Verdean descent. He is best remembered for writing the song "Jet Airliner," a major hit for the Steve Miller Band, and for his role in the documentary film Genghis Blues. Pena was intrigued by an example of Tuvan throat-singing he heard on a Radio Moscow broadcast. Based on a Tuvan record and extended experimentation, he was able to teach himself the vocal techniques required to sing like that -- which eventually earned him an invitation to sing in the second international Khoomei Symposium in 1995 in Kyzyl, Tuva. He was the first westerner to compete in the competition and was placed first in the Kargyraa contest. He also won the "audience favorite" category. Tuvans affectionately call him "Cher Shimjer" (Earthquake), because of the deepness of his voice. Here is his song, "Tuva Farewell" from the documentary. Both the DVD and the CD is available for purchase online. www.amazon.com www.amazon.com More about Pena and Tuvan throat singing: en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org

Tuvan igil, Didgeridoo & Throat Singing - performing the song "Believe" live in concert

John Pascuzzi, Steve Sklar, and Dr. Richard Grossman performing a song I wrote a couple years ago for an organization aimed at eliminating the practice of using children as soldiers. Steve and Richard had never heard the song before we played it, and jumped in after the 1st verse with Didgeridoo and Mouth Harp and made it all seem too easy, which is what happens when you get to play with seasoned musicians like them, thanks guys! Steve Sklar performs some Throat Singing in the introduction. Having never played together as a group before, the 3 of us had about an hour to sketch out a framework for a 2-hour live show that was being filmed and recorded, and about 20 minutes of rehearsal time. Almost entirely an improvisational concert, one of us would take the lead on an idea, while the other two would support the effort musically. During the concert, Steve Sklar performed vocals (Throat Singing), played Guitar, Igil, Didgeridoo, Singing Bowls, Ocean Harp, and Gong. John Pascuzzi played the Tuvan igil, Hang Drum (Hang), and Waterphone. Dr. Richard Grossman sang some vocals, and also played a number of various instruments (Conch, Mouth Harps, Rainsticks, Shakers, Gong solo, etc) and provided soundscapes and ambient sounds, similar to his solo Sound Journey concert experiences. Hang Drum, Didgeridoo, Tuvan igil, and HAPI Drum - Spinergy

HAPI Drums available at: HapiTones.com Hang Drum, Didgeridoo, Tuvan igil, and HAPI Drum are featured in this groovy little music video. The Hang Drum was recorded using a "contact microphone" to capture and accentuate the finger taps, muted notes and hand slaps to get a percussive effect to go along with the sweet tones of the Hang. This didgeridoo was made from an agave cactus stalk. The "igil" is a bowed 2-stringed instrument from Tuva. The HAPI (Hand Activated Percussion Instrument) Drum is a melodic steel tongue drum, and in this video I'm playing a prototype that was sent to me to evaluate, though they are now in production.

Hapi Drum with Tuvan igil, bass and drums - "Hapi Fingers" by John Pascuzzi - HapiTones.com

HAPI Drum from HapiTones.com This is a HAPI drum in the key of E Major pentatonic. The unique tone of the HAPI (hand activated percussion instrument) is created by a tuned vibrating steel tongue. The concept is similar to a wooden tongue drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it vibrates creating sound waves. We have added dampening of the notes and drum body to keep the drum from becoming discordant and "ringy". This technique is built into each drum and provides excellent resonance while supplying the correct amount of dampening. By placing low notes next to the appropriate higher notes we achieve multiple harmonics. Their vibrations create desirable overtones which compliment the timbre of the tone. Players of the Hang, Tank, Hank, and Tongue Drums will enjoy playing a HAPI. Thanks for watching! Music recorded by John Pascuzzi (a single thread)

In the Republic of TUVA, the mountain basin is populated with lakes and rivers. The inspiring landscape is home to the powerful and beautiful voices of ‹Khoomei›. A long-awaited ‹Khoomei› samples have finally arrived, encompassing 154 files in ACID|WAV and REX2 formats. This collection features samples of ‹Khoomei› , male and female throat singers, and two types of stringed instruments: ‹Doshpuluur› and ‹Igil›. All sound files are presented in both 44.1 kHz/16-bit and 96 kHz/24-bit formats. Tuvan Sounds on the disc: KHOOMEI : A type of throat singing with a distinct fundamental and an overtone melody, used in folk music from Tuva. DOSHPULUUR : A three-stringed instrument with fretless similar to a banjo, but with the warm, organic sound of wood and goat skin. IGIL : A two-stringed, bowed and fretless instrument. Deeply connected with the mythology of the horse, the most important animal in Tuvan culture. The Igil sounds like a cross between violin and cello, and is often used to imitate the sound and rhythms of the horse.
