HAPI Drums available at: HapiTones.com Hang Drum, Didgeridoo, Tuvan igil, and HAPI Drum are featured in this groovy little music video. The Hang Drum was recorded using a "contact microphone" to capture and accentuate the finger taps, muted notes and hand slaps to get a percussive effect to go along with the sweet tones of the Hang. This didgeridoo was made from an agave cactus stalk. The "igil" is a bowed 2-stringed instrument from Tuva. The HAPI (Hand Activated Percussion Instrument) Drum is a melodic steel tongue drum, and in this video I'm playing a prototype that was sent to me to evaluate, though they are now in production.

The seven styles demonstrated here include: khoomei, sygyt, dag kargyraa, steppe kargyraa, ezenggileer, khoomei borbanggndyr and chylandyyk. Please note that the melodies, rhythms, and meters used in these examples deviate from the traditional styles of khoomei in Tuva.

SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP: Siberia, Tuva This beautiful, haunting melody represents the development of Christian music among the Tuvan People of Siberia. The background music includes various styles of "khoomei" or "throat singing". khoomei (low vocal pedal tone), sygyt (high whistle-sounding voice part), and kargyraa (low raspy voice part). HAPI Drum from HapiTones.com This is a HAPI drum in the key of E Major pentatonic. The unique tone of the HAPI (hand activated percussion instrument) is created by a tuned vibrating steel tongue. The concept is similar to a wooden tongue drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it vibrates creating sound waves. We have added dampening of the notes and drum body to keep the drum from becoming discordant and "ringy". This technique is built into each drum and provides excellent resonance while supplying the correct amount of dampening. By placing low notes next to the appropriate higher notes we achieve multiple harmonics. Their vibrations create desirable overtones which compliment the timbre of the tone. John Pascuzzi, Steve Sklar, and Dr. Richard Grossman performing a song I wrote a couple years ago for an organization aimed at eliminating the practice of using children as soldiers. Steve and Richard had never heard the song before we played it, and jumped in after the 1st verse with Didgeridoo and Mouth Harp and made it all seem too easy, which is what happens when you get to play with seasoned musicians like them, thanks guys! Steve Sklar performs some Throat Singing in the introduction. Having never played together as a group before, the 3 of us had about an hour to sketch out a framework for a 2-hour live show that was being filmed and recorded, and about 20 minutes of rehearsal time. Almost entirely an improvisational concert, one of us would take the lead on an idea, while the other two would support the effort musically. During the concert, Steve Sklar performed vocals (Throat Singing), played Guitar, Igil, Didgeridoo, Singing Bowls, Ocean Harp, and Gong. John Pascuzzi played the Tuvan igil, Hang Drum (Hang), and Waterphone. Dr. Richard Grossman sang some vocals, and also played a number of various instruments (Conch, Mouth Harps, Rainsticks, Shakers, Gong solo, etc) and provided soundscapes and ambient sounds, similar to his solo Sound Journey concert experiences.
