Former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was convicted of abuse of power Tuesday, and sentenced to seven years in prison. She said the trial was rigged, and the verdict was denounced by her supporters and criticised by the EU. (Oct. 11)

Ukraine's opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, has been imprisoned under what western European countries say are politically motivated charges. Now her daughter, Yevhenia Tymoshenko or Eugenia, has spoken out against the treatment of her mother by the current regime. Yulia's husband, Oleksandr Tymoshenko, recently sought political asylum in the Czech Republic over fears that he would soon be arrested. That leaves only Yevhenia to travel from Kyiv to the prison in Kharkiv where her mother is currently serving a seven-year sentence. Here is what Yevhenia Tymoshenko said during the interview, "When I see her, you know, I have to pick her up, move her, you know, help her to stand up, and it's evident that any slight movement causes very sharp pain. "So she's much more pale, much more weak, because she hasn't been able to get out for fresh air for over three months now. And she's under constant strain because the lights are always in the cell for 24 hours. That the video camera now has been changed to the so-called like telescopic camera which can see what she's writing, because she has to stay in bed lying down and working, and whenever she writes, they can read. "And now the regime is doing everything they can to put this pressure on her to break her morale -- to break her psychologically. Because that's, as we know and she's proven now, that's her strongest point. She's a very strong person and brave. "The repressions have gone so far, and they've crossed the line where my ...

www.euronews.com Ukraine authorities have moved to quash claims Yulia Tymoshenko is being mistreated by inviting euronews to take a look inside the jail where the former prime minister is being held. Since being imprisoned for seven years for abuse of power last October, Tymoshenko's lawyers say she has been gravely ill and complained of poor living conditions in the jail. Our cameras were shown rooms said to be typical of the penitentiary and we were also given a tour of the prison's workshop. "Sanitary and everyday life is not so bad here, but it's better not to be here," one inmate told us. The European Court of Human Rights on Friday called on Ukraine to release Tymoshenko for medical treatment. Prison authorities say their facilities are more than adequate for dealing with the debilitating and painful back problem she alleges to be suffering from. However, Sergei Vlasenko, her chief defence lawyer, completly disagrees: "I don't know what they showed you or how they've decorated, but yesterday I saw prisoners cleaning with their toothbrushes. It reminded me of my service in the Soviet Army." Our correspondent in Ukraine, Evgeniya Rudenko, says although the state prison allowed our cameras inside the colony, they did not show us the place where Tymoshenko is being held: "Not the wing, not her room or even a window of the cell block." The former prime minister's lawyers have decided to seek justice in courts outside the country. The European Court of Human Rights will take up the case of Yulia Tymoshenko. On Friday the Court of Appeal upheld a court decision that found Tymoshenko guilty of abuse of power during the signing of gas contracts with Russia in 2009. She was sentenced to seven years in prison. [Sergei Vlasenko, Julia Tymoshenko`s Legal Defense]: "We believe that at present the only feasible way to protect the rights of Yulia Tymoshenko is to appeal to courts outside of Ukraine, that is, courts that are not controlled by Yanukovych and his team." According to Sergei Vlasenko, the emphasis will be on protecting Yulia Tymoshenko's application to the European Court of Human Rights. The European Commission said on Monday that president Jose Manuel Barroso will not attend any events in Ukraine if the political situation in the country does not change. Former opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is serving a 7 year prison sentence for abuse of office, and is due to face a second trial on tax evasion charges. The Commission believes that her imprisonment is politically motivated. "We have very big concerns of what is happening in Ukraine. As far as the president is concerned, it is clear that as things stand now, the president has no intention of going to Ukraine or indeed participate in events in Ukraine at this point in time", EC's spokesperson said. The EU announcement comes now that various European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, are considering boycotting the Euro 2012 football tournament that Ukraine is co-hosting in six weeks. They want to protest against the alleged mistreatment of Tymoshenko as pictures of her bruised body were released on Friday. Tymoshenko, currently on a hunger strike, claims she was beaten up by the prison guards. EU Justice Commissioner Vivianne Reding has already confirmed she will not participate in the Open Ceremony of the Euro 2012. "You cannot close your eyes on human rights", she said.

Prosecutors are seeking a seven year jail term, accusing her of paying too much in a 2009 gas deal with Russia. EU officials warn it could jeopardise President Viktor Yanukovych's goal of closer ties with Brussels. But the former PM's critics say the EU should not interfere and that Tymoshenko has a case to answer.

Ukraine is under growing pressure from Europe over the treatment of its jailed former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. She is a rival of the current Ukrainian president -- and she is serving seven years in jail, convicted of abuse of office. She says she's been beaten in prison, which the authorities deny. Now five European presidents have said they won't attend a summit in Ukraine next month, and Germany's Chancellor may boycott any football matches played there during Euro 2012. www.euronews.net Ukraine's Yulia Tymoshenko, convicted of abuse of office in resolving a gas dispute, has had her share of accusations of shady dealing on the path from self-made businesswoman to politics. She had reportedly earlier refused the medicial check because Ukrainian doctors were involved. It is understood the two sides reached a compromise. It was the latest twist in the ongoing controversy over the imprisonment of the politician on abuse of office charges. Her supporters and many in the West say the case is a politically-motivated vendetta by her bitter rival, President Viktor Yanukovich.

Ukraine moves Tymoshenko to hospital from jail Ukraine - Jailed Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko was on Wednesday moved from her prison to a hospital for treatment by a team including a German doctor, the prisons service said. The authorities are hoping that Tymoshenko's transfer to a hospital outside the prison will defuse a growing diplomatic crisis over her treatment that threatens to overshadow Ukraine's co-hosting of the Euro 2012 football. "Tymoshenko was transferred from her penal colony to hospital for a course of treatment recommended by an international medical commission," the prisons service said in a statement. The prisons service said the former prime minister left her prison in the eastern city of Kharkiv at 7:00 am (0400 GMT) and arrived at the hospital, a state establishment run by Ukrainian railways also in Kharkiv, one hour later. An AFP correspondent saw a motorcade of four cars led by the Ukrainian traffic police on entering the grounds of the hospital at that time. Reporters had earlier been ordered to leave the territory of the hospital. The prisons service said that during her transfer, Tymoshenko made no complaint about her health. "According to doctors, the state of her health has not deteriorated in the last days." Kharkiv is one of four Ukrainian cities that will next month jointly host the Euro football with Poland in the biggest showcase for Ukraine since it won independence in the collapse of the Soviet Union. Yulia Tymoshenko being jailed for gas deals with Russia Political analyst Igor Khokhlov told during his TV interview he believes the sentence for Yulia Tymoshenko who had been being jailed for gas deals with Russiais unlikely to be changed. "I guess there is no hope the sentence is going to be changed given the situation in Ukrainian politics, because Viktor Yanukovich has for a long time seen Yulia Tymoshenko as his major opponent and actually Yulia Tymoshenko was the person who did not let him win the presidential elections 2004, when Viktor Yushchenko became president there," Khokhlov said. He agrees the case has nothing to do with economics or crime, and says there are political motives behind the verdict.
