09.09.1940 Large convoy of merchant ships under the escort of a Polish destroyer ORP "Burza" fends off a night attack by air. A U-Boot is sighted by the escort aircraft which marks the spot with flares. A Polish destroyer then makes several attacks over the area dropping depth charges to bring up the German submarine. Bei eisiger Kälte im norwegischen Christiansand übt sich die Mannschaft von U33 im Manöver. Jetzt soll das modernste U-Boot der Welt zurück in die Heimat, in den Hafen von Eckernförde. An Bord die 27 Mann- Besatzung, alles auf engstem Raum. Der 15 Quadratmeter große Aufenthaltsraum ist der Lebensmittelpunkt an Bord. Der Maschinenraum ist das Herzstück des 500 Millionen Euro teuren High-Tech-Bootes. Die Besonderheit: Das U-Boot hat zusätzlich eine Brennstoffzelle, die aus Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff Strom erzeugt. So kann das Boot bis zu 11 Tage untertauchen und fast lautlos durchs Wasser gleiten. Das können sonst nur Atom-U-Boote. Mit der Brennstoffzelle sei man bei Unterwasserfahrt von der Außenluft unabhängig, erläutert Unteroffizier Tim Brockmann. Da die Batterie nicht ewig Strom liefert, wird sie von der Brennstoffzelle unterstützt. Das verlängere die Reichweite, so Brockmann.
