UB Research: A New Way to Rust-Proof Steel


In the Rust Belt, University at Buffalo chemists are using graphene, the so-called "miracle material," to develop new coatings for rust-proofing steel. UB Reaching Others: Earthquake Testing


A major earthquake struck a 70-ton concrete bridge at the University at Buffalos Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory, but left the structure virtually undamaged. It was a test to help engineers evaluate if a fast, new construction method can build bridges strong enough to withstand seismic activity. The information gathered could usher in a new era in bridge construction in seismic areas like California.

University at Buffalo researchers lead the International Circumpolar Archaeological Project, studying how humans reacted to climate change 4000 to 6500 years ago in Siberias remote Kamchatka peninsula, a rough, remote and extremely volcanic wilderness. Fine Tuning: Technician Gary Shipe Maintains 140 Pianos at the University at Buffalo


As the University at Buffalo's full-time and only piano technician, Gary Shipe maintains about 140 pianos, two harpsichords, one forte piano and four pipe organs. As senior musical instrument curator in the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences, he spends his days in the university's practice rooms, rehearsal studios and concert halls. The SUNY Board of Trustees met this morning and confirmed the appointment of Satish K. Tripathi as the 15th president of the University at Buffalo. The centerpiece of the Cravens World installation at the University at Buffalo's Anderson Gallery is a globe comprising dozens of transparent boxes holding such items as a death mask from China and Cameroonian fertility dolls. The globe--designed by UB architecture Chair Mehrdad Hadighi, of Studio for Architecture, and Professors Christopher Romano and Jose Chang--represents local creativity and collaboration at its best. The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new state-of-the-art facility, Kapoor Hall, which will become its home in 2012.
