We grumble about this and that but when you look at how little others have it makes the little day to day stuff seem insignificant! Go to unicef.ca and give what you can. Rather than taking flowers for dinner on the weekend make a donation that will feed a family or medication to save a life. Your host will understand and thank you. Today, UNICEF fights for every child's right to survive and thrive into adulthood. UNICEF is the global authority on children. No other organization has UNICEF's experience, expertise and reach. Every child is born with fundamental human rights: the right to health care and education. The right to be treated equally, and protected from harm. UNICEF is the unifying force that helps build a world where these rights are realized, for every child. Yet today, conflict, disease, exploitation and poor education keep millions of children from reaching their full potential. And when children are held back, so is our world. UNICEF's mission is to create a better world, by advocating for the protection of children's rights. To do this, we bring people together: governments, donors, humanitarian agencies, businesses and children themselves. For every child, health, education, equality, protection. This is what UNICEF does. www.unicef.ca

LONDON, United Kingdom, 13 July 2009 — Starting today, MTV audiences around the world will see a new music video that aims to raise awareness about sex trafficking. Featuring the rock band The Killers, the video is an exclusive collaboration between UNICEF, MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) and the US Agency for International Development. The track, Goodnight, Travel Well, is from the album Day & Age. The video is the second in a series of music video collaborations that highlight the danger and impact of human trafficking. The series launched last year with an award-winning film - produced by MTV EXIT that featured the Radiohead single All I Need. "We are deeply shocked and appalled that women and children are forced into such exploitative situations, said a spokesperson for The Killers. We hope that through MTV's efforts, and this powerful video, millions of people across the world learn about this tragic form of modern-day slavery." The video for Goodnight, Travel Well has the potential to reach more than 500 million households in 168 countries. There is almost no country in the world now that isnt affected by human trafficking in some way, said UNICEF Chief of Child Protection Susan Bissell. The statistics are staggering. More than 1.2 million children are being trafficked each year and nearly 80 per cent of all trafficking is for sexual exploitation, and the most at risk are girls. We see this music video as a powerful way to reach out and raise awareness ...

TOKYO, Japan, 15 October 2009 Today, millions of children and adults in over 80 countries are marking the second annual Global Handwashing Day with special events and activities. As part of this effort, UNICEF Japan and its partners have launched a project to promote handwashing among children in Japan and around the world. As part of this effort, the renowned Japanese dancer Kaiji Moriyama has choreographed a dance for a public service announcement designed to teach children the principles of good handwashing. The dance shows children how in just 20 seconds they can properly wash their palms, nails, fingers and wrists. The dance has almost no verbal instruction, but, by simply following the steps, children learn proper handwashing while also having fun. To learn more, visit www.unicef.org

What if someone bottled the water that millions in developing countries drink every day and offered it on the streets of New York? For just a buck, during World Water Week (March 22-29), New Yorkers in the Union Square Park area were able to enjoy the benefits of DIRTY WATER. It was available in a wide variety of choices like MALARIA, CHOLERA or even TYPHOID DIRTY WATER -- and currently has 900 million consumers. Over 4200 children die of water related diseases every day and millions of people around the world lack access to clean water resources. New Yorkers were startled to find YELLOW FEVER or HEPATITIS DIRTY WATER bottles. They looked at the vending machine in disgust. Though no one drank Dirty Water, many did donate to the cause. This idea of "selling" dirty water was inspired by UNICEF's promise that every dollar donated would provide safe drinking water to 40 children for a day. This eye-opening DIRTY WATER initiative from Casanova Pendrill New York, goes beyond collecting funds for UNICEF in a unique active street effort. The goal was to shock the media and the public with this alarming issue. The campaign is currently active since people can continue donating online at tapproject.org or via text message. Text TAP or AGUA to UNICEF (864233) to make a $5 donation. This effort is part of a much bigger pro-bono Spanish/English campaign that Casanova Pendrill executed within UNICEF´s Tapproject.org. This is first time the campaign expands to Multicultural. Casanova has ...

UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a five-day visit to assess the situation of women and children amidst what is widely seen as Africa's worst humanitarian crisis. Here is one in a series of related reports. By Shantha Bloemen KATANGA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 27 August 2009 Louise Ngone is the head nurse of the Kikula Health Centre in Katanga. Ms. Ngone or Mama Louise as she is affectionately called is a tireless advocate for all children born in her clinic, and she is passionate about making sure as few of them as possible are born with HIV. Although Kikula is a busy clinic with an average of 25 babies being delivered each week, the staff and volunteers are committed to patient confidentiality, close monitoring and follow-up care for their patients. Perhaps because of this extra attention, the Kikula centre currently has the highest number of pregnant women who accept HIV testing in the province. To read the full story, visit www.unicef.org
