Help Change Canadian Drug Laws in 5 Mins: Stop Harper's Drug Policy; Legalize Cannabis

Another great video: www.youtube.com Read, copy to an email, fill in your name at the bottom, and send the letter below to our political leaders to tell them you want Canadian drug policy to be based on science instead of ideology (ie you want cannabis legalized). TO: bob.rae@parl.gc.ca, thomas.mulcair@parl.gc.ca, Elizabeth.May@parl.gc.ca, pm@pm.gc.ca, rainen@sen.parl.gc.ca, Dear member of government, I am writing you today because I am concerned with Canada's drug policies towards cannabis. You must recognize that cannabis prohibition is a policy that is contrary to true fiscal conservatism. Cannabis prohibition is a major drain on our economy -- possibly the biggest drain. Millions of Canadians use cannabis every year; prohibition is a complete failure while still creating a large tax expense. It is difficult to estimate the true value being spent on enforcing cannabis prohibition considering all the expenses in enforcing it: the prison costs, the investigations, the grow operation detection equipment, the police hours, the court hearings, the clerical work, the drug task forces, the loss of contributing tax payers and consumers, etc.. With all these expenses it is not difficult to understand how billions of dollars are spent every year enforcing this broken policy. Meanwhile criminal organizations are fuelling themselves on the finances created by having cannabis on the black market. This is likely why the 2002 Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs concluded among ...

Obama's DOJ Cracks Down on Medical Marijuana: California vs. The Feds

The federal government is in the midst of a crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries across the state of California. This is despite repeated claims from President Obama and his Department of Justice that they would not devote federal resources to circumventing state medical marijuana laws. "The law has been hijacked by profiteers who are motivated not by compassion, but by money," said Melinda Haag, one of California's US Attorneys, at a DOJ press conference on October 11, 2011. Aaron Sandusky, owner of G3 Holistic, a group of medical marijuana dispensaries in California's Inland Empire, is one such target of the DOJ's crackdown on medical marijuana "profiteers." The DOJ sent him a letter promising to shut down his operations within 14 days. And they followed through. Reason.tv talked to Sandusky, who's long battled the city of Upland's sordid handling of medical marijuana dispensaries, before and after he was raided. "We all want the same thing," said Sandusky. "We want to see less crime. That's why we have these places." Sgt. Glenn Walsh and Agent Mark Brewster, both members of the California Narcotic Officer's Association, believe that the stepped up enforcement from the DOJ is a positive development. "There's no avenue in the law, whatsoever, to accommodate the sales of marijuana," Brewster said. Walsh concurs, arguing that California's Prop 215 and SB 420 allow for the collective cultivation of medical marijuana but do not allow for a single cent to exchange ...

"Slavery was our worst idea," says legendary documentarian Ken Burns. "I'm not sure that Prohibition was second, but it's really up there." "The Noble Experiment," notes Burns, left a legacy of organized crime, moral hypocrisy, single-issue politics, and unintended consequences from which we're still recovering. About 13 minutes. Legal Fix - Portugal

Portugal's maverick drug laws a credible global model? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com After suffering the highest instance of drug-related deaths in all Europe, Portugal took a brave decision and decriminalised all drugs. Ten years on, is it a success story for other nations to follow? On the streets of Lisbon drug users light up wherever they want. One police officer tells us the girl across the street is smoking crack. He complains, but few share his sentiment. "Considering drug users as criminals just because they are using drugs is not a very realistic approach", a Portuguese drug addiction officer argues. He has just had an interview with a sixteen-year-old boy caught smoking hashish. No punishment was handed out, just advice. In Portugal it's now seen as a health problem, rather than a criminal one. Brendan Hughes of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs says it is very difficult to analyse the success of the law. He points to one very interesting fact: "In 10 years of governments in Portugal, where they have changed from left to centre-right to left, back to centre-right, drugs have stayed off the agenda". Due to the economic crisis, funding for the rehabilitation of drug offenders is going to be very seriously hit. For Dr Goulao, the public face of the law, it comes at the worst possible time. The Real Breaking Bad: How the Drug War Creates Collateral Damage

88-year-old Bob Wallace, and his 85-year-old girlfriend, Marjorie Ottenberg fell in love 35 years ago backpacking to the tops of the highest peaks in the world. Wallace is a Stanford educated engineer and Ottenberg is a former chemist and decades ago they came up with a water purification product for backpackers like themselves called Polar Pure out of their garage in Saratoga, Calif. "For an old guy with nothing else to do, this is something that keeps us occupied," says Wallace. Today, Wallace and Ottenberg are fighting the Drug Enforcement Administration and state officials to continue to operate their business. Why? The DEA says that drug dealers are using their product to make methamphetamine. The DEA says meth heads are interested in Polar Pure's key ingredient, iodine crystals. In 2007 the DEA reclassified iodine as a controlled substance and named Polar Pure in particular as a product that was of concern to the DEA. The DEA told Wallace and Ottenberg, they could continue to operate their business but they would have to pay a $1200 regulatory fee, register with the state and feds, report any suspicious activity and keep track of each and ever person who bought a bottle of their product. Bob says that the overhead alone would be too much to pass onto customers. "So that's why I didn't bother with their rules, because I would be out of business if I followed their regulations," says Wallace. The same went for camping stores and online outlets that stocked Polar Pure ...

Waiting to Inhale - Marijuana, Medicine and the Law (Full)

Waiting to Inhale examines the heated debate over marijuana and its use as medicine in the United States. Sixteen states plus DC have passed legislation to protect patients who use medical marijuana. Yet opponents claim the medical argument is just a smokescreen for a different agenda-- to legalize marijuana for recreation and profit. What claims are being made, and what are the stakes? Waiting to Inhale takes viewers inside the lives of patients who have been forever changed by illness—and parents who lost their children to addiction. Is marijuana really a gateway drug? What evidence is there to support the claim that marijuana can alleviate some of the devastating symptoms of AIDS, cancer and multiple sclerosis? Waiting to Inhale sheds new light on this controversy and presents shocking new evidence that marijuana could hold a big stake in the future of medicine.

Stossel interviews Detroit's police chief Jerry Oliver who points out that since the dealing of drugs is between willing buyers and sellers, the War on Drugs forces cops to use deceit to catch those dealing drugs. Despite all the law enforcement resources put into fighting the drug war, availably of drugs is just as high as before the drug war began. Three unintended consequences of the war on drugs are explored including that it sucks children into the underworld, corrupts cops, and creates crime. Stossel travels to Colombia and examines the effect of the War on Drugs on Colombians. The futile effect of incarcerating of drug dealers to stop the flow of drugs is noted and many people who choose to use drugs ask why they shouldn't have the freedom to choose what substances to put in their bodies. Finally Stossel travels to Europe to see how drug legalization has affected European society.

DC Capitol Hemp Shutting Down: Obama's War on Drugs to Blame

"The government is forcing a form of censorship on us," says Adam Eidinger, co-owner of Capitol Hemp, a two-store chain in Washington, DC that is closing its doors for good on August 1, 2012. "They are saying you can't talk about certain subjects if you're going to sell pipes." Capitol Hemp sells clothing and soaps and a vast array of glass and other types of pipes. Police raided Capitol Hemp last fall after an undercover cop reported "unnatural and deceptive" behavior at the company's Adams Morgan branch. What raised the cop's suspicions? According to the police report, employees corrected his use of the word bong and changed the subject whenever he brought up marijuana. The store's book selection, which included titles on drug legalization, was also cited as proof that the place was really a criminal enterprise. Under current law, drug paraphernalia is illegal, even absent traces of verboten substances. But since anything - from rolling papers to apple cores to beer cans - can be used to smoke pot, federal prosecutors end up relying on "context" to determine when a pipe is just a lawful pipe and not a contraband bong. The government seized over $300000 of merchandise from Capitol Hemp. After the feds reduced the charges in such a way that a jury trial in federal court was not an option, Capitol Hemp agreed to a deal in which it will "voluntarily" shut down in exchange for the full return of its seized merchandise. Mexico's Drug War

The Mexican Drug War is an ongoing armed conflict taking place among rival drug cartels fighting each other for regional control, and Mexican government forces seeking to combat drug trafficking. However, the government's principal goal has been to put down the drug-related violence that was raging between different rival drug cartels in Mexico before any military intervention was made.[27] In addition, the Mexican government has claimed that their primary focus is on dismantling the powerful drug cartels, rather than on drug trafficking prevention, which is left to US functionaries. Although Mexican drug cartels, or drug trafficking organizations, have existed for several decades, they have become more powerful since the demise of Colombia's Cali and Medellín cartels in the 1990s. Mexican drug cartels now dominate the wholesale illicit drug market in the United States.[31] Arrests of key cartel leaders, particularly in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, have led to increasing drug violence as cartels fight for control of the trafficking routes into the United States. The US Department of Justice estimates that wholesale earnings from illicit drug sales range from $13.6 billion to $48.4 billion annually. Given its geographic location, Mexico has long been used as a staging and transshipment point for narcotics, illegal immigrants and contraband destined for US markets from Mexico, South America and elsewhere. Michelle Alexander: Drug War Racism

Litigator-turned-legal-scholar Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, argues that we have not ended racial caste in America, we have simply redesigned it: The US criminal justice system functions as a contemporary means of racial control, even as it formally adheres to the principle of color blindness. Her provocative new book challenges the civil rights community—and all of us—to place mass incarceration at the forefront of a new movement for racial justice in America. US Police Speak Out Against War on Drugs (HD) - *** MUST WATCH ***

www.Honorable-Intentions.com Click on Russell Jone's, (above), website to get a signed copy of his new book: "Honorable Intentions." Russell Jones has been involved in the "War on Drugs" on various fronts for 40 years. For 10 of those years Russell worked as a San Jose, California narcotics detective. Later he was assigned to a DEA-run task force. As a government intelligence agent, Russell worked in Latin America observing narcotics trafficking during the Nicaragua-Contra conflict. In academia, he conducted studies of the impact of drug abuse on the crime index, wrote training programs for identifying the psychological and physiological symptoms of narcotics use, and developed rehabilitation programs designed specifically for the court-mandated client. He has traveled throughout the former Soviet Union and China to study their drug problems and policies. In the field of drug rehabilitation, Russell implemented and taught courses for various California and Texas counties, as well as for privately run programs. Russell is a court-recognized expert (on both the federal and state levels) in the field of narcotics enforcement. His journey to the Soviet Union made it clear to Russell that the "War on Drugs" cannot be won. "Drugs were prevalent even behind the Iron Curtain," he reports. "If a country, as controlling of its citizens as the Soviet Union was, still had such a large a problem - drug-dealing on Moscow street corners, meth labs in Leningrad - how could a free society ...

Wachovia Busted Laundering Drug Money

US Government Lets Bank Off The Hook Wachovia Bank reached a $160 million settlement with the Justice Department over allegations that a failure in bank controls enabled drug traffickers to launder drug money by transferring money from Mexican currency-exchange houses to the bank. Under a deferred-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Miami, Wachovia, which is owned by Wells Fargo & Co., "admitted failure to identify, detect, and report suspicious transactions in third-party payment processor accounts," according to the Justice Department. Prosecutors said the bank processed $420 billion in transactions without using proper money-laundering detection. In a statement, Wachovia said it "has made significant enhancements to its [anti-money laundering] and [Bank Secrecy Act] compliance program that have strengthened its ability to guard against unlawful use of its system by wrongdoers." Wachovia has spent $42 million improving its compliance program, the bank said. online.wsj.com tags Wells Fargo Drugs Money Laundering US Government George Carlin Execute White Bankers Wachovia Laundered Cocaine Mexico Colombia Coke Laundering Drug Trafficking Dealers Law Narcotraficantes

MK Occupy Minnesota: Drugs & the DRE Program at Peavey Plaza

Video documentation by local activists and independent media shows that police officers and county deputies from across Minnesota have been picking up young people near Peavey Plaza for a training program to recognize drug-impaired drivers. Multiple participants say officers gave them illicit drugs and provided other incentives to take the drugs. The Occupy movement, present at Peavey Plaza since April 7th, appears to be targeted as impaired people are dropped off at the Plaza, and others say they've been rewarded for offering to snitch on the movement. ~ Got a couple coins? Support our media expenses at roguemedia.org Local independent media activists and members of Communities United Against Police Brutality began investigating police conduct around the Plaza after witnessing police dropping off impaired people at the plaza and hearing rumors that they were offering people drugs. We videotaped police conduct and interviewed participants, learning some very disturbing information about the DRE program. Officers stated on record the DRE program, run by the Minnesota State Patrol, has no Institutional Review Board or independent oversight. They agreed no ambulances or EMTs were on site at the Richfield MnDOT facility near the airport where most subjects were taken. Multiple times, participants left Peavey Plaza sober, returned intoxicated, and said they'd been given free drugs by law enforcement. We documented on more than one occasion, someone being told they were sober ...

Marine murdered by SWAT at home Tucson, Arizona

How much longer will we allow this, where are all the Marines? Semper Fidelis!!! One of our own has been murdered in his home in front of his wife and baby by federal mercenaries known to the American people as SWAT. No trial, only an all out military assault and murder of an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran. Enough is enough, or should we start now, and save time by digging our graves and wait for the inevitable shot to the back of the head? We are living in the Soviet Union, WAKE UP America!!! Ron Paul for President 2012!!! Read online, "The Gulag Archipeligo". In a mid-morning drug raid May 5, a Pima County SWAT team executing a search warrant shot and killed a 26-year-old Afghan and Iraq war veteran after he confronted the intruders with a weapon in his hand. Jose Guerena become the 27th person to die in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year. (Actually, he was the 25th, but the Pima County Sheriff's office has been so dilatory in releasing information that we logged two more drug war deaths before we were able add this one to the list.) According to the initial police account, when SWAT officers broke down the door of Guerena's home, which he shared with his wife and young child, he confronted them and opened fire. "The adult male had a long rifle, opened fire on the SWAT team. The SWAT team returned fire and the male is pronounced deceased. The woman and the child are unharmed," said Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ogan. Six days later ...
