Quebec students protest university-fee rise

Tens of thousands of students in the Canadian province of Quebec have been protesting over plans to raise university fees. Until now, they have been paying just over $2000 a year, the lowest in the country. For seven weeks, there have been class boycotts, demonstrations and occasional angry confrontations with police. The students now plan to target Quebec's unpopular government. With an election expected next year, the students are threatening to use their votes to keep tuition fees low. University fees and student loan advice for parents

Since the new university fee structure was announced earlier this year, concern has grown amongst parents and students alike that attending university may become too expensive an option to consider. There is a danger that the increase in university fees and the level of misunderstanding around the new university loan structure could result in fewer bright students opting to attend university. There's no doubt a degree is an investment these days, but a new study of British millionaires shows it's still very much worth pursuing. Skandia's Millionaire Monitor report found that two thirds of British millionaires were educated to degree level, with a third achieving a Masters degree. Martin Lewis, who is heading up the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information, believes with the right financial advice and long term planning it is possible for parents to ensure their children can attend university without either themselves or their children having to live with unmanageable debt for years to come. Whilst he admits parents and students have a right to be concerned about the fee increases, he also believes there is a lot of misinformation floating around. In the following video he gives parents up-to-date advice and information to make an informed decision about whether university is a feasible financial option for their children. Dr Terry Fish, Head of Twynham School, Christchurch, Dorset also gives his views on why further education really is still worth it, while Jo ...

University: Tuition Fees, Rent and Maintenance

*READ ME, YO!* This is a video request. Just to clarify, I'm not in any way saying that you shouldn't buy nice things, clothes, shoes, ect whilst at university. I love to spend money, and I like to own nice things, but I don't go crazy just because the money is in my account. My point is that you should budget, and then you will know how much you have available for frivolous purchases, and how much you need to spend on basic living essentials. :) www.twitter.com www.facebook.com vyou.com magicalcharlotte.blogspot.com

Year 12 Student Quizzes University of Essex Pro-Vice Chancellor on 2012 Tuition Fees

Colchester student Ella Passingham seized the chance to find out more about the changes to university tuition fees when she interviewed the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex. Ella, 17, a pupil at Colchester County High School for Girls, hopes to study history at University in 2012 after completing her A levels, and will be in the first group of students facing tuition fees of up to £9000. The University made the recording as part of its work to explain the new student finance system to sixth form students. The University has also distributed a special postcard with details of the 2012 fees and new student support packages to schools and colleges in Essex, Suffolk and east London. Essex, along with most research intensive universities, has announced a proposed tuition fee of £9000 for all undergraduate courses from 2012, although this is subject to the approval of the Office for Fair Access (OFFA). Essex is ranked in the top ten universities in the UK for the quality of its research. All universities proposing fees of more than £6000 are required to produce an Access Agreement demonstrating how they will ensure fair access for all students regardless of household income. Proposed fees and Access Agreements are subject to the approval of the Office for Fair Access (OFFA), with confirmation expected in July. University Scam

University is a scam. Anyone that doubts this is a complete idiot. You see, universities are run by governments, and governments are of course the biggest businesses of all. You may be surprised by my view. However, over the recent years you've seen university fees increase. You've seen more and more people come out of the university education system in debt, and that is the ultimate goal of the State. You see, the more in debt we can plunge you, the more into the red you go, the likelihood of you having to go into the workplace and work increases drastically. It also increases the length that you stay in the workplace, the length that you stay producing, being milked. In other words, you produce more tax, which is what governments are interested in.

MONTREAL POLICE ARREST 90 DURING PROTEST

Confrontations between police and protesters continued in Montreal Saturday as dozens of demonstrators were arrested outside a convention centre. Police said 89 people were arrested Saturday after trying to disrupt the second day of a conference on the development of northern Quebec. Police had arrested a 24-year-old man earlier in the day for obstruction of justice. In the wake of the protest, which was declared illegal at about noon, conference attendees were searched to ensure demonstrators didn't enter the event. Saturday's demonstration went ahead despite the cold and rainy weather. "I think people are starting to get frustrated," Myriam Moore, a 21-year-old student at Universite de Quebec a Montreal, told The Canadian Press. "The police are abusing their power." Protesters were issued a warning before police moved in to start making arrests. Those arrested were put on city buses, and will likely be fined and charged for breaking municipal bylaws, CTV Montreal's Aphrodite Salas reported. However, some protesters could still face criminal charges, including mischief. The heavy rain and heavy police presence sent the protesters home by later afternoon Saturday. There were no reports of vandalism. Protests against a planned tuition hike, Plan Nord and police reaction to previous demonstrations have raged across Quebec in the past few weeks. A raucous protest on Friday appeared to indicate that demonstrators were growing more aggressive. Seventeen people were arrested ...

Chile police clash with student protesters

At least 25000 university student protesters have marched through the streets of Santiago, Chile's capital, calling for reforms in education, local news reported. Police fired water cannons to disperse demonstrators, after some students broke through police barricades and others hurled stones at anti-riot officers. Fifteen people were arrested, according to authorities. The students have been pushing the government for years to boost funding in a country with among the highest university fees in the world. Chilean university students receive only 15 percent state funding, the lowest of all countries part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. When taking into consideration the average family income in Chile, university fees are nearly three times higher than the United States, Japan, and Australia. Chile's president Sebastian Pinera has promised more scholarships and said that debt for 100000 poor students would be recalculated, amongst other reforms, but student leaders say it is not enough. "Today we are calling for the recovery of public education, equal access to education, quality, greater financing in the sector and, as always, regulation of the private sector and with greater involvement of the state to improve education to stop putting thousands and thousands of families into debt. We want greater participation from students, workers and teachers in the decisions being made at the universities," Catholic University Student Federation ...

Red Youth - October

Red Youth and CPGB-ML member Jamie Sokolowski speaks at a meeting to celebrate the 94th anniversary of the Great Socialist October Revolution, at Sak Hall in west London. He outlines the relevance of the October Revolution to working class youth in Britain today, and its key lessons. Chiefly, he points out the necessity of forming an organization and studying our exploitative society and the alternatives, in order to make our struggle effective; of confronting and opposing the mis-leadership of the social democratic 'Labour' Party, the enemy within the working-class movement; and the importance of imparting the spontaneous resistance that is rising around us (Student EMA and university fees protestors, Occupy Wall St and the LSX, union strikes, and the 'London Riots'...) with class-conscious and revolutionary perspective. These are the lessons we all must learn if we are to building effective resistance to the attacks of a political and economic order that is in its most profound crisis, and ultimately overthrow the British, American, EU and NATO criminally corrupt, venal and genocidal ruling monopoly capitalist gangsters. On 24 November, thousands of school, college and university students erupted onto the streets of Newcastle, protesting against the education cuts and fees which began under Labour and have been further escalated by the Condem coalition. This week the Occupy movement drew thousands of California college students to protest on campuses across the state. The University of California system faces some of the steepest budget cuts and tuition hikes in the nation. Tuition and fees could increase by 81 percent over the next four years. This fall, students saw tuition hikes just a few weeks before their classes began. Community colleges and the California State University system face similar fee hikes. On Wednesday students held protests at least 10 campuses, including UC Irvine, UCLA and UC Berkeley, where police forcibly removed students and arrested 39 people. Video: Violence erupts at 'illegal' student protest in Canada

Week-long demonstrations over a proposed rise in university tuition fees have erupted into violence in Quebec. Police in Montreal clashed with thousands of students who accuse the government of sabotaging negotiations for a settlement. Riot police have so far arrested 85 people after a government exclusion of a student group from talks triggered activist ire. Students have flooded Montreal's streets over the past few days, up in arms over tuition fee hikes that would see costs rise by 75 percent over the next five years. Thursday's riots were declared illegal after demonstrators reportedly pelted police officers with projectiles and threw garbage into the streets. Expensive University Fees Questioned

One man in Armagh wondered why Scottish university students arent required to pay for university fees while in Northern Ireland, students have no choice but to pay for a university education. Stephen Farry spoke of how the Assembly have a block budget allocated to them and how free university fees would lead to greater expense elsewhere at a cost of 40 to 60million pounds. He went on to say that he supported the notion that a university education should be free of cost. Dominic Bradley echoed the sentiment that education should be free. He went on to say: I dont think its fair that students are being lumbered with huge debts when they start off their working lives and we should continue to improve the funding of university education.
