Boeing Phantom Ray stealthy unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV)

The Boeing Phantom Ray is a stealthy unmanned combat air vehicle being developed by Boeing using company funds. The Phantom Ray is a demonstrator aircraft, about the size of a fighter that will conduct a program of test flights involving surveillance, ground attack and autonomous aerial refueling missions. The Phantom Ray project, called "Project Reblue" internally at Boeing, was first conceived in mid-2007, and started in earnest in June 2008. The project was secret, even within the company, except for a handful of executives and engineers, until May 2009.

Lockheed Martin - K-MAX Unmanned Helicopter Cargo Resupply Operations In Afghanistan [720p]

OWEGO, NY, October 5, 2011 -- The Marine Corps will deploy the Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and Kaman [NASDAQ-GS: KAMN] unmanned K-MAX® to Afghanistan next month. The decision follows the successful completion of a five-day Quick Reaction Assessment for the US Navy's Cargo Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program. A formal report, released last week by Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, confirmed that the unmanned K-MAX exceeded the Navy and Marines' requirement to deliver 6000 pounds of cargo per day. "This announcement underscores K-MAX's strong performance and the strength of the Lockheed Martin/Kaman team," said Dan Spoor, vice president of Aviation Systems in Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors. "We are fully prepared to deploy our system and augment Marine Corps ground and air logistics in Afghanistan." K-MAX will be the Navy's first-ever cargo unmanned aircraft system to deploy in an operational environment. The deploying team recently concluded training and flight tests at its base in Twenty-nine Palms, Calif., and is currently preparing the aircraft for shipment into theater. The team consists of active duty mission commanders, air vehicle operators and Lockheed Martin employees. "I am very confident in both the team and the K-MAX UAS to successfully perform their missions while deployed," said Rear Admiral Bill Shannon, Program Executive Officer for Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons. But Lockheed Martin officials said the flight was terminated at 7:25 am and no one is saying what happened . Harrison County Sheriff Joe Myers said although it was expected to land in Harrison County , it did not . Myers said he heard it had landed in Greene County, Pa. Once it was launched people here in the Ohio Valley starting call the 7 Newsroom reporting seeing what they called a UFO. The aircraft was launched and was expected to hover in an area above Eastern Central, Ohio at about 60000 feet for an extended period and complete a series of communications tests for the US Army. The airship was expected to descend in a remote area of Harrison County, where the military owns property. But again the flight was terminated early this morning. Autonomous Gate Passing with an Unmanned Helicopter

"The DLR Institute of Flight Systems is developing the experimental flying platform ARTIS (Autonomous Rotorcraft Test bed for Intelligent Systems), a fully autonomous helicopter. This project aims at maximized onboard information processing and decision-making in flight. The scenario depicted in this video shows how ARTIS receives a single high level command "Fly through the gate at position A". The helicopter then flies to an initial 10 m in front of the gate, of which only an inaccurate position is known. In this experiment, the difference between the true and this initial position was set to 3 meters which inevitably would have caused a collision with the gate. To measure this error, ARTIS captures images of the gate's red flags while flying towards it. Once the true gate position and orientation are correclty measured, the path is re-planned and ARTIS starts to cross the gate. The movement of the smaller gate flags and the exhaust smoke indicate windy weather and some wind gusts. Still, ARTIS' adaptive controller let it fly precisely along its straight line path through the gate. Technical details are available online in these publications: 'Vision-Based Target Recognition and Autonomous Flights Through Obstacle Arches with a Small UAV' legacy.vtol.org and 'Autonomous Vision-Based Helicopter Flights Through Obstacle Gates' www.springerlink.com

US sees rise in demand for unmanned drones

The US military is increasing its use of unmanned aircraft in its fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda. In an era of budget cost-cutting, sellers of remote controlled drones argue they can save the hundreds of thousands of dollars needed to recruit and train service members. And as more countries add drones to their arsenals, manufacturers are taking steps to satisfy the growing demand. Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reports from Washington.

K-MAX Unmanned Helicopter

In January, 2010, the Unmanned K-MAX helicopter demonstrated autonomous and remote control flight over both line-of-sight and satellite-based beyond line-of-sight data link. The unmanned aerial system (UAS) is a hard worker, lifting its own weight at sea level, reaching the highest altitude of any other unmanned helicopter, and carrying twice the weight of any other unmanned helicopter. And with its unique four hook carousel, the aircraft can deliver loads to different locations during the same sortie with pinpoint accuracy.

Martin Jetpack makes first unmanned test flight

We have converted one of the Martin Jetpacks to remote control so that we can push the flight envelope without risk to a pilot. Here is the first flight - Ray is flying the jetpack from the ground, and he has been replaced on the Jetpack with "Lead Ray" - a 80kg box we can move up an down to test center of mass effects on flight performance. This also demonstrates the potential application of the Martin Jetpack as a UAV with 100kg payload, or as a rescue aircraft - pilot can fly in, load a passenger and fly them out by radio control, and then bring the jetpack back empty for their own return flight.

Unmanned Motorcycle

This unmanned motorcycle is my MSc. thesis project, done in the Technion, Israel, at the agricultural engineering department. Equations of motion for the motorcycle were derived using Newton equations, and were found to be in complete agreement with existing literature. The control scheme is a cascaded design, synthesized using Horowitz's QFT method. The robust controller allows for a stable unmanned ride of the motorcycle and disturbance rejection over a velocity range. The human operator remotely commands throttle action, brakes and gives a reference heading direction. The motorcycle mechanics, electronics and actuating servo modules are all self constructed, under a budget limit of 4000$.
