Unplayed Piano was released in Ireland on June 17, 2005 and in the UK on June 20, 2005 to coincide with Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th birthday. The song was written for Suu Kyi following a visit by Damien to Burma in July 2004. Proceeds from the sale of the single go to the Burma campaign.

In 2005, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan combined powers on this hit song "Unplayed Piano." For almost 14 of the last 20 years, Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning, Prime Minister-elect of Burma, has been under house arrest as a response to her activism for democracy in Burma. "Unplayed Piano" was written as a contribution, specifically to the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday campaign, serving to propagate awareness of this situation. Rice and Hannigan's piece is beautiful, honest, and illuminating. Enjoy. :)

Damien Rice singing Unplayed Piano at Massey Hall. 18.05.2007 There was a video going on in the background - a tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi, the inspiration for this song. Had I realized how dark my video of him sitting at the piano was, I would have filmed that instead. Still, the audio turned out well and it's a spellbinding song. Definitely one of the highlights of the night for me :)
