During the spring of 2006, graduating senior Brittany McComb was chosen to give the valedictory speech at Foothill High School in Henderson, Nev., by virtue of achieving the highest GPA in the school. After composing her remarks, she submitted them to school administrators according to standard district policy. School administrators, with the advice of their district legal counsel, censored her speech, deleting all three Bible references, several references to "the Lord" and the only mention of the word "Christ." On Thursday, June 15, 2006, McComb delivered her commencement address to over 400 fellow students, families and staff. However, believing that the district's censorship of her speech amounted to a violation of her right to free speech, she attempted to deliver the original version of her remarks in which she shares her personal beliefs about the role that her Christian beliefs played in her success. When school officials found her to be straying from the approved text, they unplugged her microphone, thus ending the address. Despite extensive jeers from the audience over the school officials' actions, McComb was not permitted to finish giving her valedictory speech. In filing suit against Foothill High School officials, Rutherford Institute attorneys stated, "Brittany's stellar academic performance qualified and entitled her to address her classmates at graduation in her own words, yet the Defendants sought to censor her speech, coerce her into giving a different ...

Emily Hawley scored a perfect 4.0 GPA during her educational experience at Centenary College, earning her the title of Centenary College's 2010 Valedictorian. In front of Centenary Faculty, Staff, alumni and students, along with her family and her friends, Emily proposed marriage to the man who has been her support for years. Emily and Joshua, we could not be happier for you both. On Saturday you walked down the aisle to end a chapter in your lives, soon you will be walking up another to begin anew. Arthur is asking for your support letters to send to Feinstein and to build a case for his private bill. It won't take long so please send them in. Fire them off to artmkoyan@gmail.com He's graduating at the top of his class, but a Fresno honor student is facing deportation. Arthur Mkoyan is a valedictorian at Bullard High School. He's just a week away from graduation but he may have to head to Armenia instead of college. 17-year-old Arthur Mkoyan is a straight 'A' student, caught in a bureaucratic and legal mess that is threatening to force him out of the country where he grew up. He's preparing to graduate from Bullard High School, where he has achieved a 4.0 grade point average. Fellow students at Bullard High don't think he should be forced to leave this country. Arthur's family has been seeking political asylum here since they fled the old Soviet Union in 1992 but the US government told them there is not enough evidence to grant asylum; no proof that they'd be persecuted if they returned. Students at Bullard think the rules should be changed for a person who works so hard to succeed. Arthur is being allowed to go through graduation ceremonies and receive his diploma, and ten days later he is scheduled to be deported. His principal said the school is proud of what he's done and they're honored to have him as a graduate. Congressman George Radanovich is now getting involved in the case to see if there is a way to help keep Arthur and his family in America.

(This is Andrew's girlfriend, invading his account again.) This is the valedictorian speech for Norfolk County Agricultural High School's annual commencement ceremony held on Thursday, June 5, 2008. At first, I was literally speechless. Whoever organized graduation forgot to put my speech on the podium!! haha. I rolled with it though, and everything went smoothly. You can see the director handing me my notes in the beginning of the video. I congratulated everyone and recognized some deserving friends: Chris Kunz & Kiwi Stalley. Then I went into boring, cliche mode... but trust me, there's a surprise, and it gets better! The surprise starts around 2:40. :) So bare with me on this speech, it's less 4 minutes long. You can handle it. For those of you who know what I did: I smuggled in the goods in a fanny pack under my dress, undid the buckle while seated, and let it drop once I reached the podium. I felt like a secret agent. The director and crew had no idea I was going to use props. Only Mertz and some friends knew about my plan. My mom recorded this; hence the random ceiling action lol. - Laura Mahoney, Valedictorian

President Toope, honored members of the convocation, fellow graduates, ladies and gentlemen. I am incredibly honored to be speaking here before you today. Not too long ago, I woke up one morning after taking my nice warm shower and I thought to myself... wow, this is a very exciting time to be graduating. Why? Let me tell you two reasons. Firstly, 2008 marks UBC's Centenary. Yes, 100 Years. Grads, I hope none of you has reached that age already, but if you have, you've been in school for way too long. This milestone goes to show the deep history that this university has to offer and we are among a precious few on this planet to be a part of that. Secondly, speaking of our planet, have you noticed that the fuzzy squirrels that run around campus have been getting bigger, bigger and bigger? My fellow graduates, if we stayed here any longer, very soon, we will be sharing our precious classroom space with these animals. Can you imagine? What horror, what tragedy, but let's not get too carried away here. Ladies and gentlemen, for these past four years, we have transitioned from naïve wide eye teenagers into mature adults. Some of us have gotten wiser, more intelligent, whereas others have lost hair, developed wrinkles, grown sideways, slept through an exam, failed an exam, lost an umbrella, lost a shoe and the list goes on and on and on. But what we remember most about our time here, is not our classes, but these incredible experiences that we have endured. UBC has given us ...

At my graduation from the University of British Columbia, I had the honor of being nominated and chosen as student speaker, to announce the grad class gifts. It was really a lot of fun to write and deliver the speech, which was of course all about the meaning of life as metaphorized by Star Wars. I received a first-class Bachelors degree with a double major in Anthropology and World Religious Studies.
