Variable CAM Timing

Variable CAM timing is a concept that entails changing the camshaft timing, as needed, depending on engine LOAD demands. This technology was impossible just a few years ago, due to the state of the art electronics needed. The latest Variable CAM Timing (VCT) systems are infinitely variable, meaning they have no specified settings. CAM timing can be changed or varied instantaneously across the whole range (ie. Plus or Minus 30 degrees from normal). By varying the CAM timing, the ECM can regulate the power curve to meet its own needs. On any gasoline engine, each RPM setting has an optimum CAM timing setting, depending on load. Up until a few years ago engines were set whatever the CAM lobes were machined at. With modern VCT, this relationship can be varied, also varying the engine's power curve. Most modern VCT systems do not control valve lift, but do great by simply changing open and close timing points during engine operation. Toyota VVT-iE, Variable Valve Timing

Describes the operation of the Toyota VVT-iE or variable valve timing with Intelligence Electronic. This is Toyota's highest state of the art variable valve timing system, which uses a small electric motor/actuator to advance or retard the valve timing. By varying the speed of the motor, the system is able to change follow the CAM sprocket, increase speed to advance or decrease speed to retard. BMW VVT Vanos CAM Timing

BMW VVT Vanos CAM Timing VANOS is BMW's answer to variable valve timing. It is a combined hydraulic and mechanical camshaft control mechanism, managed by the car's DME engine management system. At the lower end of the engine-speed scale, the intake valves are opened later, which improves idling quality and smoothness. At moderate engine speeds, the intake valves open much earlier, which boosts torque and permits exhaust gas re-circulation inside the combustion chambers, reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Finally, at high engine speeds, intake valve opening is once again delayed, so that full power can be developed. VANOS operates on the intake camshaft in accordance with engine speed and accelerator pedal position. VANOS significantly enhances emission management, increases output and torque, and offer better fuel economy. The latest version of VANOS is double-VANOS, used, among others, in the new M3. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (TOYOTA)

VVT-i, or Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Toyota, similar in performance to the BMW's VANOS. The Toyota VVT-i system replaces the Toyota VVT offered starting in 1991 on the 5-valve per cylinder 4A-GE engine. The VVT system is a 2-stage hydraulically controlled cam phasing system. VVT-i, introduced in 1996, varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position.

1998 Supra Variable Valve Timing System Variable valve timing or VVT-i has been incorporated on the 2JZ-GE to improve throttle response and low end power, while increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. As the engine reaches higher RPMs the VVT-i system reduces the amount of vavle overlap, to ensure smooth efficient power delivery throughout the entire powerband. It uses a moveable piston located within the intake camshaft sprocket, and a duty cycled oil control valve to provide a 60 degree range of intake cam timing adjustment.

Valve timing error on BSA 441cafe, timing gear and crank key check next?

Had a pal over today and it is confirmed either timed or every other stroke the exhaust and inlet are remaining open at tdc on intake. I can find tdc and there is play on tappets then after a few kicks I can also find the valves both with pushrod pressure at what looks to be 180 of the points setting thus the blowing out of carb during a stage of kick. -Possible causes I can guess: Timing gear teeth have broken off and are in situ shifted over. -the key on crankshaft has sheared or is shearing and the gear is slipping or rotating. I can back up piston to tdc with slack possible audio click from timing area in case.

Taking a look at a degree wheel for checking and setting cam timing.

10th part of the Marine big block Oldsmobile engine build. There was some lost footage in this vid. I was just talking about how the crank spins twice as fast as the cam and by advancing the cam timing by 4 degrees the intake lobe opening event @.050" lift happens 8 crank degrees sooner. This event on this cam was supposed to happen at 12 degrees btdc. Came in at 10, advancing cam 4 degrees changed the event to 18btdc(6 degrees advance from spec).

How to lap valves on a 1995 Eclipse Talon 420a head (non-turbo)

When my 1995 eclipse timing belt broke I knew that there was a 99% chance that the valves were bent in the process. I searched the internet for a good way to replace them, without having much luck.
