Garden spider vs giant wasp Part 1

If you've never seen a spider wrap it's prey then you have to see this. We had this large garden spider in a window and had these wasps flying around the yard looking for spiders to feed their young when they hatch. These wasps dig holes in the ground that they stuff with stunned spiders. These things are huge. We wanted to see how things went against these large garden spiders. Very educational.

WASP NEST MUSEUM

This video shows my extensive collection of MONSTER nests which are built by various species of hornets, yellowjackets, and paper wasps. I am an expert on social wasps as a hobby. I have an intense passion for the genera Dolichovespula (generally aerial-nesting yellowjackets), Vespula (generally subterranean-nesting yellowjackets), Vespa (true hornets), and Polistes (common paper wasps). I love collecting their abandoned nests and adding them to my collection. I think they are masterpieces of nature! Some of the showpieces in my extensive nest collection include a huge bald-faced "hornet" (D. maculata) nest which measures over 3 feet tall, an enormous red wasp (P. annularis) nest which is the size of a dinner plate (1 foot in diameter), a large Mexican honey wasp (Brachygastra mellifica) nest and 2 giant overwintered southern yellowjacket (V. squamosa) nests. I wouldn't have these 2 perennial yellowjacket nests in the first place if it wasn't for the kindness of Bob Jacobson (The scientist who described V. flavopilosa). Of course, I have many other exceptional nests in my collection. I often refer to my apartment as a "wasp nest museum" because I have so many nests! LOL!!! There are over 100 photos which show most of my nests in this link here (Please check them out and let me know what you think.): www.flickr.com Also, I have my own website which educates people on the beneficial aspects of yellowjackets, hornets, and paper wasps. The website needs to be updated although ...

Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Wasps by Aristophanes (1909)

The Wasps by Aristophanes - Comedy with Complete Incidental Music (1909) TEXT: sites.google.com I recommend opening the text in another window to follow along with the recording. [0:00] Overture [9:36] Act I [44:01] Act II [1:20:56] Act III This is a recording of the satirical comedy "The Wasps" with incidental music by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), as produced at Cambridge University in 1909 - except here it is performed in English with a modern translation and adaptation by British theatre director David Pountney (born 1947). The original playwright is, of course, the great ancient Greek dramatist Aristophanes (ca. 446 BC - ca. 386 BC). The triennial performance of an ancient Greek play in the original language is a long-standing tradition at Oxford and Cambridge. In 1908, the Cambridge Greek Play Comittee invited Ralph Vaughan Williams, who had studied at Trinity College as an undergraduate, to compose incidental music for "The Wasps". Although he had few successes under his belt at this early stage in his career, Vaughan Williams' nomination was supported by Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford, both of whom had written Greek Play scores at Cambridge and had taught Vaughan Williams. The comedies of Aristophanes typically use three characters: a protagonist, antagonist and chorus. In Pountney's version, one narrator portrays both the protagonist and antagonist. The protagonist here is Procleon (called Philocleon in the original play), an ...

Westland Wasp

The Westland Wasp was a British small first-generation, gas-turbine powered, shipboard anti-submarine helicopter. Produced by Westland Helicopters, it came from the same P.531 programme as the British Army Westland Scout, and was based on the earlier piston-engined Saunders-Roe Skeeter. It fulfilled the "MAnned Torpedo-Carrying Helicopter" (MATCH) requirement of the Royal Navy for a helicopter small enough to land on the deck of a frigate and carry a useful load of two homing torpedoes. The Wasp HAS.Mk 1 was introduced to service in the small ships role in 1964, after an intensive period of trials by 700(W) IFTU between June 1963 and March 1964. It served in this primary role with 829 Naval Air Squadron, but also in training units to supply crews for the front line with 706 NAS between 1965 and 1967 and in 703 NAS between 1972 and 1981. Single airframes also served for light liaison duties in the Commando Assault squadrons, 845 NAS and 848 NAS until 1973. Although effective as a submarine killer, it was best deployed paired with a Wessex HAS.3 submarine hunter. In the late 1970s, the Westland Lynx gradually started to replace the Wasp. On 25 April 1982 the Argentinian submarine ARA Santa Fe was spotted by a Wessex HAS Mk 3 helicopter from HMS Antrim. The Wessex then attacked it with depth charges. HMS Plymouth launched a Westland Wasp HAS.Mk.1 helicopter, and HMS Brilliant launched a Westland Lynx HAS Mk 2. The Lynx attacked the submarine with a MK 46 torpedo, and also ...

Women Air Service Pilots (WASP) Win Congressional Gold Medal

The Women Air Service Pilots served their country during World War II ferrying aircraft, flight instructors and test pilots. On July 1, 2009 President Obama signed a bill awarding the WASPs with the Congressional Gold Medal which was also awarded in time to Native American soldiers and the Tuskegee Airmen. This award was only made possible by the huge effort by the WASPs and supporters who worked to make sure that these heroes were given the credit they deserved for their service to their country and America's victory in World War II. This story was broadcast on July 4th as part of a patriotic tribute to ALL veterans who served the United States.

Inside the Collections: Wasps

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the world's largest collection of wasp nests with James M. Carpenter, entomologist and curator in the Museum's Division of Invertebrate Zoology. The Museum's Hymenoptera collection includes more than 1200 paper nests made by social wasps, as well as the 7.5 million-specimen gall wasp collection donated to the Museum in 1958 by the widow of Alfred C. Kinsey. The primary focus of Dr. Carpenter's work is the wasp family Vespidae, a group of nearly 5000 described species that encompasses the most sophisticated societies among the social wasps, ie, ones that build large, communal nests. (Gall wasps, by contrast, are solitary; they lay their eggs, fly away, and never have contact with their offspring again.) Carpenter's special concentration is on the commonly known yellowjackets and hornets. The Hymenoptera are a large order of insects that includes bees, wasps and ants. The group features more than 115000 described species, as much as 10% of the described species diversity of the planet. Economically and ecologically, Hymenoptera are one of the most important groups of taxa. Produced/edited by Jill Bauerle. For more information, visit amnh.org

Hungry Ant Vs Hungrier Bees (Yellow Jacket Wasps). Attack!!!

The Bees are actually WASPS (yellow jackets). Courtesy of the very concerned viewers of this video. You are all very interesting and have a great sense of humor. Love the comments. Again for those of you who don't understand why I have kept bees in the title: Exposure. Type in Bee in the search, then type in Wasp. There are more results for bees. And more searches. Thus for reasons of exposure, I have CHOSEN to leave "Bees" in the title, while clarifying in the description. If this is a very difficult concept for some to grasp (or who may perhaps be too concerned as to the impropriety of the misinformation, and eager to correct it, to read the description), I have updated the title. Enjoy.

NATURE | The Queen of Trees | Wasps Inside the Fig | PBS

www.pbs.org Inside the fruit of the sycomore fig, a complex drama plays out in miniature. Male fig wasps cut down the flowers that have budded inside. Then, the females pack the pollen from the flowers into special pockets on their breast. As the females work, the males tunnel outward to the surface of the fig, creating an escape route for the females who will carry the pollen to other trees. Without this help from the wasps, the sycomore fig would not survive. NATURE's “The Queen of Trees” airs on PBS Sunday, September 7 at 8 pm (check local listings),part of the 27th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen/WNET New York for PBS.
