Wayang Kulit, Ki Purbo Asmoro, lakon Brubuh Alengka 1.mpg

Ki Purbo Asmoro, lakon Brubuh Alengka 1, Nopember 2008, Sasana Mulya, Kraton Surakarta, karawitan Mayangkara #1 The opening scene on the screen depicts a landscape crowded with the masses of troops from the war between Alengka (King Dasamuka/Rahwana) and Pancawati (King Rama, fought by Anoman's monkey troops). To the tune of Kinanthi (kukusing dupa kumelun) sung over sulingan, the kayon reveals King Rama, in a state of meditation and despair, thinking about the war in progress. He envisions King Rahwana (Dasamuka) with the kidnapped Sinta. We then see Rahwana giving an order to his uncle Prahastha to move forward in battle, and one of the monkey troops, Anila (blue), is seen battling Prahastha. Anila finds a stone statue behind him and uses it to strike a fatal blow to Prahastha. Dasamuka enters to mourn over the corpse of his uncle Prahastha, and the vision of his grandfather Sumali then emerges. Sumali tries to get Dasamuka to see that he is using his power in evil ways—that he has lost sight of his humanity, and is setting himself up to be the cause of destruction in the world. (The stone statue used to kill Prahastha is in fact the form of Indrati—Sugriwa, Subali, and Anjanis mother, who was cursed by her husband after committing adultery, and turned to stone decades ago. She is released to the heavens once the statue shatters, but this is not shown since it is not part of the major plot line of this story.) Wayang Kulit and the ISA, 30 Oct 2010 (Abolish ISA movement, UK)

Title : Politik Wayang Kulit- 'Wayang Kulit & the ISA : Episode ' Wayang kulit is a form of traditional shadow puppet theatre, popular in Malaysia and Indonesia. The aim of this performance is to entertain and educate. Although wayang kulit is performed in a light hearted and playful manner, the subject matter is serious. It is a sober reminder of the current worrying state of human rights in Malaysia. Malaysia's Internal Security Act (ISA) is a law allows for indefinite detention without trial. In the last 50 years, over 10000 people have been detained under the ISA, the large majority of whom have been human rights activists, political opposition leaders, journalists, bloggers and ordinary civilians.Under the ISA a person can be detained for up to sixty days, without warrant or trial and without access to legal counsel. Detainees often face serious mental and physical torture in detention. In June this year the UN working group on arbitrary detention visited Malaysia and concluded that the ISA must be repealed and torture in detention brought to an immediate end. To this end we call on the Malaysian government to repeal the ISA and sign and abide by the UN convention against torture, that it may earn the respect and admiration of both the international community and the citizens it serves.
