YafaRay is an external renderer (download it from www.yafaray.org) that is integrated with Blender 2.49 via Python scripts. You can add many dramatic features, such as global illumination, caustics, enhanced ray tracing, and self illuminated objects, to your renders, with YafaRay. YafaRay extends Blender's built in renderer with special types of lighting, new material options, and enhanced world settings. It's not intuitive how to run YafaRay to get these features. YafaRay works with the settings you set up in Blender, ignores some of them, and adds other features. The goal of this tutorial is to show you an efficient workflow of Blender and YafaRay. I can't cover all of the features in a short video. Hopefully, there will be enough for you to get started and to explore more on your own. There's no substitute for practice. I am assuming that you have installed YafaRay correctly to work with Blender 2.49b.

This is a tutorial on how to install the most stable build of yafaray. I use: Blender: v2.49 www.blender.org Yafaray: v0.1.1 www.yafaray.org Python: v2.6.2 www.python.org You may need a different version of Python depending on the mood your Blender is in. I personally have never been asked to download anything other than 2.6.2 with this stable build, but just in case you are asked, I provided the link to the pthon.org website versus the 2.6.2 download page. If Yafaray prompts you for the installation path of Blender scripts, copy and paste this: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts in the provided line. That should work provided you installed blender in that directory. If it brings up an error message, take off the "scripts" on the end so it reads: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\ and then proceed. If you had to take the scripts off the end, navigate to that folder: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\ and move the file "yafaray_ui.py" to the scripts folder: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts If you're still having troubles with all this and I still lost you, leave me an email and I'll help. My first real fluid simulation with Blender (2.49b), rendered with Yafaray. Here some details and settings: -bake time about 5 hours -render time about 25h (on an AMD x6 1090T 6 x 3,2 Ghz) Yafaray: -direct lighting (some fireflies (white dots) on the floor I couldn´t get away) -AO with 10 samples -raydepth 6 -2 area lights and a HDRi map for lighting Fluid: -resolution 400 (even with this high res the fluid mesh was a lot more detailed, I used a Makehuman Mesh and when the cube goes through the body you can see that the blender fluid simulator is just not the best) -realworld size 10 -I used zero gravity -viscosity preset is oil (I forgot to reset it to water after some tests, but it made hardly any difference with oil) -end time 5.5 (700 frames with 48fps (unfortunately yt converts it to 30fps) If you have any questions or want the .blend file, just ask. Youtube makes the Video a little darker (the floor isn´t that black) so watch it at least at 480p to get a better contrast!

This was a three part experiment: 1) render an animation using yafaray 2) finally make a block tower like other posers 3) combine the yafaray's output with blender's composite nodes i think it turned out pretty nicely! each frame took about 90 seconds to render.. i spread it out over a few days the reason it looks grainy is because i had to 'optimize' the settings in order to get an animation within the week :)

It's just a short test and there has been multiple errors that were unfixable so once I got this I stuck with it. Settings posted after comment, Now this is a super easy set up I got from messing around. Water material: glass-water 20 degrees, the box: shiny diffuse with default settings. Render method: photon mapping with 32 samples, (AA) Gauss with 5 samples. Ray depth:64= actually didn't take much longer to render than just a value of 4 which is awsome! Now for the magic part: delete lamp.Go to world settings, select "sunsky" for background. check the box "add sun", use the displayed sphere to set it's position. set sun power to 4.

I created a turnable table using the game logic editor and played with the objects tumbling around inside of it while recording it as keyframes, then I rendered it with Yafaray, it's really quite cool! objects include a monkey, torus, cube, and a prism that diffuses the color spectrum.
