Indigenous Peoples Music, a podcast and vblog presents the group "Yarina" as they perform one of their current singles "catchimora". YARINA (which means "remembrance"in the native Quichua language of the Incas) has since 1984, been dedicated not only to musical excellence, but also to the preservation and sharing of the beauty, courage and survival of the ancestral traditions and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Andes. Their wholehearted and passionate dedication to musicianship, excellence and cultural expression has earned them the honor of being named "Ambassadors for Indigenous Ecuadorial Performers" by the Department of Culture, Quito, Ecuador.
This is a dance of entreaty, in which a group of dancers goes from door to door asking parents to let their marriageable daughters come with them. While they are asking, the dancers receive gifts, food, and drink. This dance is performed at large community celebrations. The dancers wear costumes of animal skins from the mountain region like alpaca, vicuña, guanaco, and llama that their ancestors used. Wearing sheepskins and diablo huma (devil-head) masks, dance in homage to hills and mountains.
