Starting old Caterpillar D8 dozer with pony motor

Camp Creek Thresher show, July 2009 Wavery, NE. A friend of ours starting his 1945 (I think), Cat D8 for the antique parade at the show. Pony motor has a broken kill switch, so he puts his hand over the intake to choke it off.
Old International bulldozer startup

Camp Creek Threshers show Waverly, NE July 18,2009. Dozer starts first on gas, with carb, then when warmed up a bit, switches to diesel and injectors. Sorry, can't remember the model or year of dozer.
Start up Caterpillar 3516 Gen Set V16

Start up Cat 3516 generator for a no-load test. 2 meg unit, provides 480 volt, 3 phase emergency power at work. Sets in a room with its baby brother, a Cat 3508, v8.
1976 Mercedes Benz 240d Startup

This car has been my daily driver for the last 4 years, but has been sidelined since May due to a bad automatic transmission. It has not been started since, so I decided to let it warm up a bit. Kind of boring waiting for the glow plugs. Takes a while for oil pressure to build up. Engine has a lot of miles on it, it rattles pretty bad, but when warmed up it quites right down. Until I get this fixed, I have been driving my '78 MB 300d. It doesn't quite get as good of mileage, but you can sure feel the extra cylinder under the hood.
Antique Gamewell Fire Alarm call box

The inner workings of an antique Gamewell Fire Alarm call box. Once open, I apply 12 volt dc to energize the solenoid, otherwise the clock motor would not be released. Then when you pull the alarm lever, it winds the clock motor, and starts it's cycle. You can see the cam gear pulsing the reed switch.
Dyno testing Aultman Taylor 25-75 steam tractor

Belt driven brake dyno testing a 1916? Altman Taylor 25-75 steam traction engine. You can really tell when the dyno is braking. Engine was rated at 60 hp, dyno test stated 50 hp, was lower since Nebraska limits antique boilers at 120lbs.

64hdd inside a Commodore 1541

I've gutted a 1541 disk drive, replaced everything with a mini-386 motherboard, 5gb hard drive, and replaced the 5 1/4" with a 100 mb zip drive. It also has a built in xe1541 interface cable, so you just use a regular serial cord to hook to the 64. I've shown the startup with a monitor hooked up, normally it runs headless, with no keyboard or monitor. Just start it up with the stock power switch, wait for the beep, and start loading. Zip drive maps to device 8. Hard drive maps at device 11. Commodore 64 is a 64 inside a C16 black case. Jiffydos and blue power LED added.
1920's Browning railroad steam crane 25 ton

1920's 25 ton Browning railroad steam crane, live steam on Sept 20, 2008. We had to shut down early with some mechanical issues. We will be back up next summer. Ex-CB&Q, now on grounds of Camp Creek Threshers, Waverly, NE. We run this crane 2 weekends a year, giving demos. Sorry for the shaking video, cheap camera.
Live steam Pyle National Dynamo railroad

1920's ex-CB&Q railroad steam crane. Starting and shutting off 32 volt dynamo. Only running on 50 lbs steam at the time. Runs two spotlights on front of cab, light in cab, and electric fan. Camera makes the fan look like it is standing still. Crane on the grounds of Camp Creek Threshers, Waverly, NE.
1950 Kenworth 220 Cummins twin sticks run through all gears

Well, not all the gears, there were 2 overdrives left. I was up to direct in both boxes, that is 55 at 1800 rpm. Jake in direct, downshift to direct and under and jake again. Five speed main (overdrive) and 3 speed brownie (overdrive). This was a test drive for my "new" tachometer. Found a vintage Stewart Warner on ebay this summer. Audio on camera was clipping really bad. I hope to get a better camera soon.
1984 Dodge Cummins diesel crew cab dually

Bought this from Wayne Talkington, of TNT Motorsports of Fontana, CA. My dad and I saw this truck several years ago, when John Talkington brought it out to Nebraska. It still had the 360 v8 in it then. The Talkington's repowered it with a 1998 5.9 Cummins diesel, CPL-1553. 727 auto trans, 3.54 rear axle. Intercooler doesn't fit with the grill, so it was removed. They pulled a 50 ft goose neck trailer and their Kenworth dragster with this truck. I removed the Holland 5th wheel so I can haul stuff in the bed. Our trailer uses a receiver hitch anyway. No matter what I put behind it I never notice it. So far I have been getting 17mpg loaded or empty. Added the pyro, boost, oil, water and filter gauges, and removed the mechanical fan and replaced with 2 electric ones. Being from CA, they did not have the grid heater installed, so I had to buy one of those.

1941 Army Navy Genset Hercules ZXB Hobart Brothers Generator

This is a 1941 Army or Navy surplus generator. 3kw, 50 volt 3 phase, uses 2 phases to provide 110 volt. Adjustable voltage, vary it from zero to about 140 volt with no load. Not regulated, so as load increases you need to adjust. Governor on engine will maintain 60 hz, or close anyway. Powered by Hercules ZXB 4 cylinder flat head engine. Hobart Brothers generator. Installed on the frame of my 1950 Kenworth semi. No muffler yet, just the stainless steel flex tube. Used to exhaust out the side next to the radiator, but that is now eye-level, so I took it down through the frame and will mount muffler down there. Will get sheetmetal sandblasted and repainted soon, right now it is as I bought it 20 years ago.
HO Proto 1000 F3 with sound

Added Digitrax 123 controller and MRC 'Sounder' diesel sound decoder to a Proto 1000 F3. First frame on video shows still photo of frame. I had to cut away a small portion of metal frame to make room for speaker. Each decoder is programmed individually, so I still need to adjust throttle settings on sound decoder and Digitrax.

1950 Kenworth 220 cummins First time moving this year

1950 Kenworth, 220 cummins, 5x3 transmissions. Today it reached 80 degrees, so it was time to take the KW for a quick trip. It had been started already today and earlier this year, but this was the first time moving since last fall. Rooftop camera recorded some nice sounds as I was heading around the block. Visually that is kind of boring though............
1950 Kenworth interior before and after

Cleaned up the interior of the KW this summer. Painted all metal with hammertone brown. Instead of the pressed cardboard inserts, I used brushed aluminum panels (it was free). For the headliner, I used 1/16" fiberglass sheeting that Menards sells, painted the same hammertone brown. Added the Tachograph under the dash, speedometer is not hooked up, but clock works when you wind it up.
1920's Railroad Steam Crane CB&Q Waverly, Nebraska 2003

From the Camp Creek Thresher show, our 1920's ex-CB&Q railroad Browning steam crane. Converted from an old VHS-C tape, so sorry about the quality. Currently down for boiler repairs (almost complete), we fire it 2 weekends a year during our shows. We burn used engine oil, so its really cheap to operate. For the show, we dig a hole, then fill it with the clam shell.

1964 Chevy Impala 292 six 3 speed overdrive

I've had this car for almost 20 years. I found it slowly rotting away on a farm. I've brought it back mechanically, but it needs paint yet. Engine: 292 six cylinder, stock. Trans: 3 speed overdrive (Borg Warner) Rear axle: 3.36:1 Options added to car: Bumper guards Door edge guards Power brakes 14x6 station wagon rims 6-way power seat Soft Ray tinted glass This is the 3rd engine I've had in this car. When I bought it, all I had to put in was a 230. When a 250 became available, I put that in. This summer I pulled the 292 from my station wagon project that I sold and put it in. The 292 was bought from a salvage yard in 1987, and spent the last 20 years in a station wagon. I have put over 100k on it, it has never used any oil, and starts in any weather. Never done anything other than a carb kit, or change oil. The 3 speed overdrive usually requires a complicated wiring harness utilizing a kickdown switch, governor and engage switches. That is stupid. I just run it myself utilizing a relay controlled by an old Mopar cruise control switch. When the overdrive is not engaged, you can shift up and down easily with out using the clutch. The trans allows the driveshaft to freewheel faster than the engine, thus there is no deceleration drag with the engine. When engaged, then the engine will slow the car down during decelerations. You can't run the overdrive in reverse, the trans will lock up. I can run it in all 3 forward gears, however, the torque of the engine will hurt the ...
