ZSL London Zoo counts all the animals!

www.zsl.org Why would you want to count penguins, hippos and meerkats? Simples it is that time of year again - ZSL London Zoos annual stocktake. Spare a thought for Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo today, when they will be undertaking a complete head count of every animal. More than 750 different species including gorillas, squirrel monkeys and tigers will be tallied up in the count. Keepers will also brave the cold to take stock of a number of new inhabitants, including the first lion cubs born at the Zoo in a decade, a new Komodo dragon and a critically endangered mangabey baby. New exhibits mean that more animals than ever before need to be counted. The Zoos brand new Animal Adventure exhibit, which opened in March this year, includes a pair of nosey aardvarks, a pack of coatis and some prickly porcupines all of which will be individually counted by keepers. For the first time ever, some of the Zoos biggest and slowest residents shell be included. The brand new Giants of the Galapagos exhibit opened in July this year and is home to three giant Galapagos tortoises, who will have to be included in the count. Last year was a bumper year for ZSL London Zoo with babies and new residents galore. Keepers now have quite a task on their hands to count all of the animals from the smallest bug to the tallest giraffe.

ZSL and Pygmy Hippos

www.zsl.org Footage of Ben Collen and Tracey Lee working with pygmy hippos - one in Liberia, one at ZSL London Zoo. Pygmy hippos survive two civil wars Conservationists have discovered that the pygmy hippopotamus, currently classified as Endangered, is surviving in Liberia following two civil wars and devastating habitat degradation, and have amazing photographic evidence to prove it. Led by Dr Ben Collen of ZSL and comprising a team from ZSL, Flora and Fauna International (FFI) and Liberia's Forestry Development Agency (FDA), the team undertook extensive monitoring of Sapo National Park in Liberia to find the endangered pygmy hippopotamus, one of the most elusive and secretive large mammals on the planet. A network of camera traps were set up in Liberia's only national park and astonishingly the traps' first images of wild pygmy hippos were recorded within the first three days. The expedition was funded by the People's Trust for Endangered Species. Dr Ben Collen, ZSL Research Fellow, commented, "The pygmy hippo is an extraordinary, mysterious creature that has almost never been seen in the wild. ZSL's EDGE programme identified it as a species in need of urgent conservation attention and so we set out to previously war-torn Liberia, one of the species' last refuges, to search for survivors. We were delighted to discover that a population still persists there, but remain highly concerned for the species, which continues to face significant threats from poaching and habitat ...

Whipsnade welcomes Chocolate the moose| ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

www.zsl.org Whipsnade's caramel-coloured newcomer, Chocolate the moose, keeps close to his protective mother Minnie. ZSL Whipsnade Zoo welcomed this caramel-coloured newcomer -- a moose calf called Chocolate -- on its 80th birthday on May 23rd. A bubbly and hungry baby, before too long this leggy moose will grow up to be tall, dark and hopefully handsome. For now the calf is enjoying milk from mother Minnie and nibbling leaves from a nearby willow tree. The calf is the first moose born at the zoo for many years. Keeper Carole Day said mother Minnie, aged two, is being a super-protective mum and the calf is thriving.
