The Shilka ZSU-23-4 [ZSU = Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka - Anti-aircraft Self-Propelled Gun] is a Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG) featuring a prominent radar dish that can be folded down mounted on a modified PT-76 chassis. ZSU 23-4 Shilka, is capable of acquiring, tracking and engaging low-flying aircraft (as well as mobile ground targets while either in place or on the move). Employed in pairs 200 meters apart, 400 meters behind battalion leading elements, it is commonly used to surpress ATGM launch sites, such as TOW vehicles. The armament consists of four 23mm cannon with a maximum slant range of 3000 meters. Ammunition is normally loaded with a ratio of three HE rounds to one AP round. Resupply vehicles carry an estimated additional 3000 rounds for each of the four ZSUs in a typical battery. Recent (October 1997) information details ZSU-23-4 updates/modernization being offered by the Ukrainians that include: a new radar system replacing the GUN DISH radar, plus a sensor pod believed to include day/night camera, and a laser rangefinder; and mounted above radar/sensor pod is a layer of six fire-and-forget SAMs, believed to be Russian SA-18/GROUSE. The ZSU-23-4 is a fully integrated, self-propelled antiaircraft system with four liquid-cooled 23-mm automatic cannons mounted on the front of a large, flat, armored turret. The ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" is a lightly armored, self-propelled, radar guided anti-aircraft weapon system (SPAAG). ZSU stands for Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka (Russian: Зенитная Самоходная Установка), meaning "anti-aircraft self-propelled mount", 23 stands for the caliber of the armament and 4 stands for the number of gun barrels. It is named after the Russian Shilka River. The radar-guided ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" SPAAG, with its four 23 mm (0.90") autocannons, was a revolutionary SPAAG, proving to be an extremely effective weapon against enemy attack aircraft and helicopters under every weather and light conditions. The ZSU-23-4 has a very high density, rate and accuracy of fire, as well as the capability for each of the four autocannons to fire its own type of projectiles from separate belts. The appearance of the "Shilka" caused very significant changes in NATO tactics in aircraft use at low altitude over the battlefield. Despite its present obsolescence as a modern short-range anti-aircraft weapon, the ZSU-23-4 is still deadly for enemy light armoured vehicles, infantry and firing points as an infantry-support vehicle. With its high rate of accurate fire, the "Shilka" can even neutralize tanks by destroying their gun sights, radio antennas, et cetera.[2] "Shilka" (especially late models) have excellent performance and high systems reliability.

It was the first Soviet mass produced tracked SPAAG. In the USSR it had the unofficial nickname "Sparka", meaning "pair", referring to the twin autocannon with which the vehicle is armed. Basing on past experiences with SPAAG designs, Soviet engineers designed a vehicle that used a modified T-54 chassis, with four twin road wheels per side instead of five, and with much thinner armour. The vehicle was armed with the 57 mm S-68 twin AA autocannon in a new large rotatory open-topped turret. The ZSU-57-2 consists of three compartments: driver's in the front, fighting in the middle and engine-transmission in the rear. The hull of the ZSU-57-2 is more spacious in comparison with the T-54 medium tank because of the thinner armour and has different location of some equipment also. The general layout with transverse mounting of engine is the same.

ZSU's Operation Furious Proton part 1: Memoirs of a Combat Medic
Memoirs of a Combat Medic. Part 1 of Operation Furious Proton, the second misison in Blackdove Campaign. Mobile respawn was unavailable, and the chopper was taking ages to respawn (discovered chopper hadn't actually been destroyed, crew just got shot out of it), so this medic was taking zero chances in exposing himself to fire. Note multiple friendly casualities around objective building, most of whom were simply unreachable without losing more men/medic.

Killing Boredom :) lol this is my own way how to stop a huge group of heavily armed insurgents by myself XD i deployed a Ural Ammo truck behind my Shilka to give me plenty of ammo & engaged them at a longer range than they can with their RPGs cos once they get within 500m they'll start firing them. Too bad the vid finished b4 i could show all of them dead cos there were many. This version of Shilka fires from all 4 barrells not just 1 like the game's shilka, it kicks ass :) SHILKA DEVESTATING FIREPOWER!
